Can somebody tell me did the cb550f1 come with a single stay front mudguard or two.

I think it depends which country it was sold in. Most U.K. ones I have seen have 2 stays, U.S. ones tend to have 1, but either will fit.

+1 with Hairy, UK two stays.
Can't find on honda4fun anywhere that it states that also ZA came with a single stay and Honda have always stated that the F1 never came in Black but, they did in Zuid Afrika  ;)

According to the Parts List CB550F2 the F2 model came in Excel Black (NH-57). I've never seen one in real life and don't know what markets it went to. http://www.honda4fun.com/pdf_parts_list/pdf_spac550/CB550F2/CB550F2_1.pdf
The Parts List for the CB550F and F1 does not mention that color.
