Following on from my topic on ignition coils, i've been looking at NGK plug caps and spark plugs.
Are these the correct parts i need?

I notice the plug caps have resistors fitted, should i use the plugs with resistors or do i need to use an alternative part that don't have resistors in?
Thanks
Mike

Use plugs WITHOUT resistors.

Use plugs WITHOUT resistors.
Thanks, i thought that may be the case. What model plugs are recommend?
-
Plugs without resistors if your caps are resisted.
-
I use D8EA's
-
Whatever is recommended for a 550, but without the R in it ie book says DR8ES, USE D8ES
-
Thanks both, from looking at the parts list the D7ES is listed.
I presume the D8 is a cooler running plug? What would the advantage/disadvantage of the cooler plug be?

No idea but it's what we have on the shelf. I now have them fitted to my CB400 and CB550

I gave D8ES as an example as I didn't have the application list to hand. Cooler running plugs are for sustained high rpm use, higher the number the cooler the plug. If in traffic stop/start most of the time go one grade hotter (lower number), also useful if worn engine fouling plugs.

My 550 With electronic ignition had DR7ES fitted but soon failed them.
I replaced them with DR8ES and its been fine since I do very little town use.

Thanks everyone for the help. I know what i need to get now :)

meant to say D7ES and D8ES

Originally in the book it was D7ES which wasn't a particular good plug. Dealers in Holland considered it OK for the break-in period but advised later to use newcomer D8ES-L if you would ride the highways. The D8ES probably would have been to cold. You may say the D8ES-L with its tip that protruded just a tiny bit further, was in between the 7 and 8. Honda France advised them for the CB500/550 and called them auto-nettoyante (selfcleaning). BTW, the D8ES-L was/is used on a wide variety of bikes. I had them in my CB500 on all my travels in Europe often at maintained high speeds. I wouldn't have felt comfortable with the 7, not when you, what happened more than once, were late to switch to reserve... So it depends on your riding, but if the D8EA is the new name for the D8ES-L, it's a good choice. If you don't cruise over 5000 rpm, you may consider the 7EA.

Way back when i switched to D7EV on a 500 and it started noticably better , did more to the gallon and picked up cleaner/quicker. unfortunately NGK have stopped making them now but Denso do an equivalent that i never tried

The only Denso that is not really an equivalent is the iridium plug IX22 which is a later development. So far I've read no recommendations for our bikes.

I just put D7ev into the denso cross reference and it came up with what you said
-
It's pity I never tried the D7EV that you had. IIRC it had smaller electrodes which is good. It wasn't overpriced either.

Do D7ES exist? I thought there was only D7EA?
-
According to NGK the S was copper core center construction and the A "special design", but no details, but think they are pretty much interchangeable though.

I've got DR7ES plugs with resistor caps so I suppose I'm completely wrong, but strangely that's what David Silver sells
-
My 500K0 has the original caps which are 7.5k ohms (and no longer available) which according the the US site were standard on earlier models. But most seem to prefer 5k caps and non resistor plugs, but I have run both combinations. I have installed a relay so that the coils get the full battery voltage so the old switchgear only has to switch mA. If you think there is a problem with the running, change, otherwise I would only replace at the next service.

Bit of a hijack here but ill be breif..
My cx runs (or should i say is running) dr8es-L
Anyone know if thats correct and whats the L refer too
-
The L stands for a 1/2 heat range...i.e. your DR8ES-L is actually an 8.5 heat range.

Not really, the effect is 7.5.

Cheers for that ...wouldnt of thought the old cx was in need of such fine tuning
