I have got a new set of barrels that need rebored, I have ordered .5 oversize pistons, today I went to see a local machine shop and he quoted me £50 per bore for rebore and honing is this the normal price that I should expect to pay for this job.

Probably about average, BUT make sure they are familiar with Honda bike engines regarding piston clearance tolerances when boring, Honda's have far tighter clearances than car engines!

This guy does mine as he is a customer ,i think he charges about that , he also does John Wyatts bikes .
I think Trigger on here is cheaper and he knows what he is doing .

You have to find a engineer that knows the right clearances on a old Honda, a lot of boring I do these day is putting right were someone has had a re bore and it is way out of spec.

thanks for the replays, the guy was recommended by a friend he said all the boys who do the racing use him its an old boy who works himself and does a lot of old British stuff so I,m sure he will be good I will stick with him as he came highly recommended.

just be careful he knows how tight the clearence is,its about a quarter of the brit stuff !!

If he does all old Brit engines just remind him the tolerances are absolutely miniscule compared to Brit bikes, I mean MINISCULE ;D

it might be an idea to publish the clearance ,
in simple figures, and advise the best way to achieve it,
IE; measure the piston,and add X thou for clearance ??

I wish it was that easy Mr Webley, it all depends on the grade of alloy used to make the piston, different alloy expands at different temperatures. Honda original pistons were made from a very high grade cast and the clearance can be kept at a minimum. A less grade will expand more and would require more clearance ;)
