Can any one throw any light on why my right side cover doesn't fit my bike? I'll upload a photo but the last lug is nowhere near fitting the cutout in the frame, doesn't appear bent or welded.

Could be a couple of reasons.
Firstly there is supposed to be a grommet inside the frame lug.
Secondly, there is a slim possibility that you have either a K3 frame which used different lugs or maybe the side panel is off the F2 and the F1 and F2 frame lugs were different?

Yeah the gromet disintegrated, the other side fits fine

Could it be that my cover is distorted, its got a heavy layer of fibreglass on the inside presumably to strengthen a repair.

Is that stub round or rectangular?

The top right location point looks 90 Deg out of orientation.
Does you side cover have the a matching locating lug?
-
Nope, all the lugs are the correct orientation just they don't line up

They changed that one Ted on the 550F, the side panels are a different shape to the 500/550K. It's correct.

The orientation is the same on CB550 F1/F2/K3 and the panels are interchangeable ;)
