Title: Which helmet cam to buy?
Post by: Drew400 on January 20, 2016, 08:07:40 PM
Hi all,

I'm toying with the idea of getting one of those GoPro (Session) things or perhaps another brand that's recommended by fellow SOHCers.

I imagine using it both for self-protection and more importantly for capturing those great moments when the sky clears, the long and winding road beckons, etc...! Will probably use it in the car too.

Any views to support my research will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

D.

Have a look on e-bay for an SJ4000, Chinese copy of a go pro, at a fraction of the cost! I bought one for myself as taking my daughter to school and back on my Honda 90, it's incredible how aggressive car drivers can be toward it! Anyway, the camera does full HD recording, gives a great picture, also can be used for a still camera, and the outer casing is guaranteed waterproof to 30m deep (100ft to us oldies!), and under £20 delivered from Chinese sellers with U.K. warehouses, or under £15 if your happy to wait for one from China or Hong Kong. I was so impressed I bought 2 more, so now I have one facing forward, one facing behind me, and one attached to my jacket! Seriously good value, and MUCH cheaper than a genuine go pro! ;D ;D ;D

Yes brilliant buy the sj4000  , I bought one Xmas time , even the granddaughter uses it when riding here pony , can then monitor her thro wifi on to phone or iPad while she's riding around the paddock etc, BUT one wants to be careful when buying as there are a LOT of fakes coming out of CHina, important to do your homework with uk buyers , (genuine sj4000 )

are this size camera ok to fit a helmet?

I have seen them on slow speed bike events, but what about around motorway speeds?

does it cause more wind noise,an extra pull on the helmet strap?

or do you fit it on the handlebar?

what about the small round cams, those any good ??  this is just a sample

Haven't tried motorway speeds John , but my son fitted his underneath the peak of his helmet while off-roading with good results ,but with the waterproof case attached the sound is restricted , he thought about getting a spare cover then dremmel one or two slits in the side, also he has fitted it to my 5yr old grandsons helmet while on his moto X bike , as with the wifi you can stream from tablet etc , to watch while little man tearing around field ,
So it's down to the waterproof case as ,determine the wind noise etc ? If you know what I mean , but excellent value compared withe more expensive Go Pro cams ,

Hi all,

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Many thanks for the hints and tips. All much appreciated, albeit as you have suggested 'buyer beware'!

Cheers, D.
