Are all government departments staffed by cretins? I ask myself. The 400 is SORNed at the mo and as it's over 40, I'm trying to tax it for free.
The post office can't change the tax class (they said), so I sent off the V5 to Swansea. A week or so later, I get the V5 back - unchanged, and a note telling me to get it done at the post office. I phoned up the DVLA and the person confirmed that the post office was the place to go.
So I go to a different post office and the only way to get the taxation class altered is to pay for 6 months tax, send off a V70 and the V5 to Swanseashire again, with the hope I get it refunded BTW, it was Swansea that sent me the V70 so why didn't they just do what I wanted. Complete bloody morons the lot of them. Pity the Luftwaffe didn't completely flatten the place*.

you have my sympathy,
but as its SORNed leave it untill you want to tax it,then CHANGE the class to Historic,and go get it taxed (for free)
at the post office politely show them the change,and all should be well,

I tried that last year John when I sold the CB500KO. If I remember rightly it was SORN'd, had to have a change of owner and because it had not been on the road for 25 odd years, it was not on historic Tax. The post office said DVLA had to do it, I looked on the DVLA website and they said the Post Office can do it. In the end the day the new owner took delivery I had to tax it on line, the customer paid the 6 months RFL duty and then they reimbursed him. Bloody silly way around things if you ask me ::) ::) ::) ::)

One of the problems I have found with UK Government Departments is that they predominantly employ casual labour, who they don't train particularly well.....as they may not be with them next week.......and link that to the dreadful dearth of rules and regulations that even a High Court Judge cannot fathom, and you have a recipe for disaster.
A good friend of mine sent his Driving Licence to DVLA to update his new address and when it was returned to him, his Motorcycle Licence entitlement had been removed.......when he complained all he got was a series of 'Sloping Shoulders' as everyone denied all knowledge and he was left with one simple option - if you want to ride a motorbike again, retake your Motorcycle Driving Test!
Maybe if enough of us bent the ears of our MP's, we might see some changes.

Perhaps, John, the post office in Hereford know how to get things done, unlike them around here. I need it on the road so I can ride to Shepton Mallet. I know it's early but I also know how long DVLA can take to do the simplest thing.

the PO "should" accept and change the taxation class,and they will send your V5 to Swansea to be
amended and returned by post,
if your up this way,bring all the details,MOT etc,and take it to the PO near me,
if you want help,call me,

Is this historic taxation class a rolling date.
Mine is 76 will I be able to claim the historic taxation or is it fixed at 1975!!

On the PO computer there isn't a button for it. There's a button for disabled, that kind of thing but not historic. It's all in the post on the way back to Swanseashire.

Paul, to answer your query. It is a 40 year rolling but the change can't be made until the following January. Another 12 months for you. Best to ride it as much as possible to get your money's worth.

I believe the DVLA actually work from 1st April, not January. Details here:

It just shows; the more you Google something, the more conflicting answers you get. The DVLA website says January, although their website is years out of date. No surprise there then.

That's what I found Mike just confusing.
One post said 25 the next 40 rolling and not at the discretion of the government.
Why can't they just make it clear but then again maybe they don't want to >:(

It was originally 21 years then they realised how much it was costing and made it pre 73 (25 years at the time) then after mucho badgering it was changed to 40 years rolling

That has happened a lot.I have learned to copy all original documents before sending. That
is how I kept my m/c license
