CB500/550 / 550 Ignition Coils
« on: August 27, 2017, 10:11:55 PM »
My bike didnt come with ignition coils when i bought it, so i need to buy a set. Im not sure my budget can stretch to Dyna coils, so i wanted to know what my best option would be.

1: Buy a set of original coils, knowing the HT leads need to be repaired/replaced
or
2: Buy a pair of pattern coils from wemoto, etc. (Are there any issues with these coils, as you find with some pattern parts?)

Thanks
Mike

CB500/550 / Preferred Regulator/rectifier combo
« on: December 18, 2016, 04:45:43 PM »
I'm looking for a Regulator/rectifier combo for my build to maximise space under the seat.

Is there a preferred model or supplier of unit that is better than others (DS, ricks, electrex, etc)

Also I'm not sure if it makes any difference but I am using a lithium battery.

Thanks

CB500/550 / 550 rear tyre size
« on: August 08, 2016, 10:31:08 PM »
I'm about to order the tyres for my 550k3. I like the classic look tyres so have decided to go for metzelers. Me11 on the front and me77 on the rear.

Which tyre size would be preferred for the rear.  I have the choice of 4.0 x18 64 H which I presume is tubeless or 3.50 x 18 56 S.

Is the 3.5 tyre wide enough for the rear? Also, would the tube tyre be better than the tubeless or can tubeless tyres be fitted with tubes?

Thanks
Mike

CB500/550 / CB550K3 Rear brake plate
« on: February 23, 2016, 09:03:41 PM »
I'm looking for the correct rear brake plate for my '77 550k3. Will a brake plate from a 550f be the same fitment? The part number on it is 4300 374 000

If not can anyone provide me with a picture of the type I'm looking for and maybe a correct part number?

Thanks

CB500/550 / Oil Guide
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:31:07 PM »
Whilst stripping the crankcases to be soda blasted i removed both oil guides. When rebuilding should oil guide B be replaced? Im unsure of whether it is meant to be of a solid plastic construction or is it rubber that has hardened over time that needs replacing?

A picture of the part I'm talking about:

Thanks

CB500/550 / Primary Shaft Bearing
« on: February 08, 2016, 08:13:10 PM »
I'd like to replace the primary shaft bearings in my '77 550k3. They feel a little rough due to the of the amount of water that had contaminated the oil in the engine I imagine.

Can anyone point me in the direct of the correct bearing and where i might find them?

Thanks

Interchangeability / Cb500 550 Kickstart
« on: January 28, 2016, 10:43:39 PM »
My CB550K3 was missing a kickstart when i bought it. So I'm looking to buy one.

Would a kickstart from a '73 cb500 be the same as a 550 k3 kickstart?

Thanks

Project Board / 1977 CB550
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:51:13 PM »
Some will have seen my introduction post but if you haven't, First of all, this is the first bike i've owned and its a big learning experience more than anything for me, i've had numerous cars and I'm currently build a turbo westfield but bikes are something i have never worked on. So please excuse what some may feel are stupid questions.

Today i went and collected a new project. Its a 1977 CB550 K3, it looks like someone has changed the forks to super dream items as well as the wheels. Im hoping to find some good used items, refurbish them and replace them. As can be seen from the pictures, some bits are missing and its not in too good a state but something i thought was suitable to work on.

I went and collected the bike from leominster this afternoon. To pay my wife back for coming with me i had to take her out to dinner so wasn't able to start until we got back (she wasn't pleased).

Here it is before it was put in the garage:

I've removed the seat, tank and exhaust and just had a look at what exactly is missing and what i need to do:

One thing I'm not sure of what it is/where it is meant to fit is this:

Could anyone give me a pointer on what it is?

New Member Introductions / Hi from Tamworth.
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:24:31 AM »
Hi, my names Mike, I'm from Tamworth (just outside Birmingham).

I've just placed a deposit on and hopefully go to collect a '77 CB550 Four at the weekend. My plan is to fully rebuild it and maybe go down the cafe racer style route. Ive never worked on a bike before and i don't have a license to ride one (which some people will no doubt find strange). However i've got a huge interest in anything mechanical.

This is a picture of the bike, as you can see its missing some parts like the carbs and the rockers and cover. The seller wants £300, which i thought was a pretty good deal?

I bought the bike to learn about them as I've got no experience at all. I've since learnt that the forks are from a super dream. I'd planned on changing back to the spoked wheels anyway as I'm not a fan of the allow wheels. So it was good to learn the reason why it didn't have spoked wheels.

Here is also a picture of the westfield kit car I'm building which i will fit the bike build in around this:
