CB500/550 / Oil Guide
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:31:07 PM »
Whilst stripping the crankcases to be soda blasted i removed both oil guides. When rebuilding should oil guide B be replaced? Im unsure of whether it is meant to be of a solid plastic construction or is it rubber that has hardened over time that needs replacing?

A picture of the part I'm talking about:

Thanks

I spent a few hours on the frame this afternoon and got it finished.

Rear hoop and seat mounts welded in:

I also made a small battery box and welded a bracket underneath the swing arm to mount it. I just need to weld the aluminium box up

Thanks for the info Oddjob.

I emailed hendersons to confirm whether the picture or text was incorrect and they have confirmed it is a bare item and updated the website.

Thanks for the info both. I have removed the bearings today, the end bearing in the case is an NTN item 6205 and the bearing on the shaft is also NTN but has a part number of 63 / 22 A. Would this be the 6322 Bryan mentioned? As they are NTN not koyo, would this be an indication they have been replaced at some point?

Thanks

CB500/550 / Primary Shaft Bearing
« on: February 08, 2016, 08:13:10 PM »
I'd like to replace the primary shaft bearings in my '77 550k3. They feel a little rough due to the of the amount of water that had contaminated the oil in the engine I imagine.

Can anyone point me in the direct of the correct bearing and where i might find them?

Thanks

Tonight i got the rear seat frame mocked up in position. I just need to work out a way out finishing off the ends of the frame underneath the hoop.

The wheel is only there to check positioning.  Im having a set of new spoked wheels made with black powder coated rims and stainless spokes with the hubs i've got.

Interchangeability / Cb500 550 Kickstart
« on: January 28, 2016, 10:43:39 PM »
My CB550K3 was missing a kickstart when i bought it. So I'm looking to buy one.

Would a kickstart from a '73 cb500 be the same as a 550 k3 kickstart?

Thanks

Thanks for the input chaps, i will replace the primary chain and cam chain whilst the engine is apart.

Will this gasket set be suitable? and will it include all of the seals i need or will these be extra?

I finished off stripping the engine down tonight. The only sign of damage i've found from the water is a small amount of rust on the primary drive gear on the crankshaft. I haven't attempted to clean it up yet but I'm hoping il be able to.

Pistons and top crankcase removed:

Bottom crankcase, I've just got the main shells and primary shaft bearing to remove

Top crankcase, just the shift drum to remove

A question: I've read a lot of topics on keeping the standard airbox and filter. Seeing as i don't have the airbox and the carbs i buy will need rebuilding/rejetting to suit the engine. Other than having to rejet the carbs which i would have to do anyway is there any other issue with using pod filters instead of the standard airbox?

Thanks

I got the brackets cut off the other side this evening:

I've just got a few smaller sections to tidy up and then i can cut the bridge at the back. I also got an impact screwdriver and undid all the bolts from the clutch housing, so i can carry on with stripping the engine.
