The logbook for the bike arrived today. Which pleased me as the seller never had it when i purchased the bike, against my better judgement i bought it anyway (after doing a HPI).

Anyway, i made a little progress tonight.  I never mention when i started the topic that I'd like to go with a brat style with the bike. I know its not to some peoples taste but i've always liked that style of bike.

With that in mind, i started on removing some of the brackets from the frame that i won't need. Side panel mounts, battery tray mount, etc.

Before

After

I only got one side done as it was getting late but hopefully tomorrow i will finish the other side off. Im not sure yet if I'm going to cut the rear of the frame slightly and weld an upswept hoop in like this:

Or just remove the bridging section between the 2 sides weld a brace in to mount the seat to.

I made a start on stripping the engine down to try and limit any damage from any water. Tonight I got the head and cylinder removed, so far I'm pretty pleased with what i've seen. The bores look to be pretty good with no visible scoring or lips, so I'm hoping i can use it without a rebore. The only bit of damaged i've found so far is a slight mark on one of the pistons.

You can see the damage in the circle. After i've got it all stripped down and inspected i want to get the cases painted/powdercoated, is there a preferable way to clean the crankcase. Vapour blasting, etc?

Thanks for the info both, I checked the fuse box, it looks very clean, no corrosion. The only time the light goes off is when this fuse is removed:

If either of the other fuses are removed the light stay on.

I then stripped all the tape off the loom and found no wires spliced that shouldn't have been. The only issue i found is the positive feed from the solenoid to the mulitplug that feeds the main loom, the red 12v+ wire was quite corroded and broke while i was examining it. I may replace these with modern waterproof connectors in the seat pan I'm going to fabricate.

I doubt this would be causing the problem with the light. To sum up, the light operates with nothing plugged in, only the main loom connector to the solenoid and the ignition switch, in the on position, not P.

I haven't got any lights on in the headlamp.  I've now disconnected all of the plugs in the headlamp and when the ignition is switched on the tail light still illuminates. So the connection must be elsewhere.  I've attached a picture of the frame plate and headlamp switch

Sorry i didnt phrase it very well. The tail light goes out when the ignition is turned off, but it come straight on when the key is turned.

I presumed it should only come on when the light switch is used? Or am i mistaken?

Thanks, that thought did cross my mind. Il take a look. When the switch is unplugged the light also stays on, i don't know if this makes any difference?

My Ignition switch arrived today. So i hooked a battery up and tested everything. Everything seems to work, the only issue i can see if that the rear light is constantly on. The light switch has no effect on its operation, when the switch is moved the light flickers ever so slightly but nothing more.

Is there anything i could look at that may be causing it?

Thanks

Brilliant, ordered along with a spark plug spanner. I've decided to strip the engine down now and clean all the parts. Hopefully to try to protect them from any further damage. Just incase the water hadn't been in there too long.

That's great thank you. Il keep a look out for them.

Before I remove the wiring loom I'd like to test that everything works. However the ignition switch is faulty ( it's held together with a cable tie).  Is there a brand of switch that's ok to use? Or should I go with a genuine Honda item?

Thanks guys, Is there a specific year of carbs/inlet I would be looking for?

Unfortunately I don't have the rocker cover. I think that is the reason for all of the water ingress, it seems like it has been left outside for a while.

Are the rockers and cover specific to the 550, or would a 500 set work if i can get them?

As I'm not going to get around to the engine build yet, i wondered if it would benefit at all to fill the engine with some fresh oil that i've got spare?

Thanks everyone, its all really useful information to me, i've learnt so much already. Il keep an eye out for some carbs, the frame is the first thing I'm going to be working on though. So i've got plenty of time to gather the bits together.

I made a little bit of progress this morning. Both wheels are off, the engine is out and i've taken a look at the forks. The chrome seems to be pretty rusty and I'm not a fan of the wheels, so i may see if i can source a set of original forks and spoked wheels.

Before i took the engine out though i wanted to check it turns over as i didnt know what state it was in. The good news was it turned over quite freely. The less pleasing news was when i drained the oil, 2 litres of water came out before the oil.

As you can see from the picture theres a bit of rust on the camshaft and tops of the valves but I'm hoping its still useable. Im planning on a full engine rebuild anyway.

Some will have seen my introduction post but if you haven't, First of all, this is the first bike i've owned and its a big learning experience more than anything for me, i've had numerous cars and I'm currently build a turbo westfield but bikes are something i have never worked on. So please excuse what some may feel are stupid questions.

Today i went and collected a new project. Its a 1977 CB550 K3, it looks like someone has changed the forks to super dream items as well as the wheels. Im hoping to find some good used items, refurbish them and replace them. As can be seen from the pictures, some bits are missing and its not in too good a state but something i thought was suitable to work on.

I went and collected the bike from leominster this afternoon. To pay my wife back for coming with me i had to take her out to dinner so wasn't able to start until we got back (she wasn't pleased).

Here it is before it was put in the garage:

I've removed the seat, tank and exhaust and just had a look at what exactly is missing and what i need to do:

One thing I'm not sure of what it is/where it is meant to fit is this:

Could anyone give me a pointer on what it is?

Thanks everyone for the welcome and information, i think i will look for a set of 550 forks and a rear hub, can anyone tell me that the standard size for a '77 cb550?

The westfield has got a 2litre duratec fitted with a turbo from an impreza wax running around 10psi. The power will be limited to around 230bhp with engine mapping though. As the engine is standard other than a modified sump.

Hi, my names Mike, I'm from Tamworth (just outside Birmingham).

I've just placed a deposit on and hopefully go to collect a '77 CB550 Four at the weekend. My plan is to fully rebuild it and maybe go down the cafe racer style route. Ive never worked on a bike before and i don't have a license to ride one (which some people will no doubt find strange). However i've got a huge interest in anything mechanical.

This is a picture of the bike, as you can see its missing some parts like the carbs and the rockers and cover. The seller wants £300, which i thought was a pretty good deal?

I bought the bike to learn about them as I've got no experience at all. I've since learnt that the forks are from a super dream. I'd planned on changing back to the spoked wheels anyway as I'm not a fan of the allow wheels. So it was good to learn the reason why it didn't have spoked wheels.

Here is also a picture of the westfield kit car I'm building which i will fit the bike build in around this:
