Either on here or the US site are the build sheet and PDI instructions that I sent. They give the clearest pictures

Fine Bryan, but what do I search on?  I've tried all the sensible search questions to no avail!

CB500/550 / CB500K harness routing
« on: June 25, 2017, 11:14:46 AM »
Folks, I know that many queries of this kind have been posted before, but none have specifically given an answer to the subject question.  :(  I've seen many posts, diagrams, photos etc. that have shown 350/400/550/750 harness routing, but nothing which has shown the factory routing for a CB500 be it K0, 1 or 2.
I'd really like to get the routing as close to original as possible, including where the loom clips are located.
CMSNL doesn't really show it to detail, and from my research, none of the shop manuals do either.
Anyone able to help please?

Anorak's Corner / Re: What's your brew, as in life trade
« on: June 05, 2017, 11:10:48 AM »
As an Antipodean Anorak, I finished High School 1967 and spent a couple of weeks as a roustabout for 3 gun shearers on a property which had ~9000 sheep (some Merino).  This taught me a shiatload about what hard work was!!  ;D
Having not matriculated to uni (upset a teacher or 2 in the final years!) I instead joined an international telecommunications organisation as a senior technical officer.  Started off in Sydney NSW where I played around with a few trail bikes and had loads of fun with my mates going out after dark and riding around in State Forests etc.  Had a road bike or 2 as well.
Moved to Western Australia in the mid '70s and spent 10 years in a place called Carnarvon, about 900kms north of Perth at the satellite station.  When that closed down, transferred to Perth and have been here ever since!  Was doing the same work until I was made redundant in '04.  During the time I had several bikes, some road, some trail.  Joined a small comms company in '06 and finally retired in '09.
A close friend of mine who restores lots of bikes to concourse condition basically sucked me in!  ::)  So I looked around to see what was available, and found the CB500K1 in cafe style.  The plan is to bring it back to some sort of originality.
So here I am, wondering what I've got myself into!  :o

Apparently, anoraks are what you Britishers call folk who have a passion for a particular pursuit.  I have several pursuits (Amateur Radio, caravan travel, etc.) but I guess this restoration thing is my latest!  ;D

Project Board / Re: CB500K1. Cafe Racer to Original!

My restoration is absolutely not about the money.
Apart from which, I'm retired some 9 yrs now and altho' living a reasonably comfortable lifestyle, I'm not flush with cash!  :(
I want it to look fairly much like it did in '72 and also be able to ride it wherever and whenever! 8)
If I win Lotto however, then the game changes LOL!  ;D ;D ;D

Yes I saw that.  I can purchase a heck of a lot of other bits for that price!  :)

A mate of mine who restores 750s recently priced a set of 4 into 4 from Motorcycle Yamiya......$6000!!!!  ::) ::)

It will be restored in the UK style, as you've correctly surmised.
Original 4 into 4 are unobtainium so I'll stick with the 4 into 1.
I kind of like the tank paintwork so will probably match the side covers with the "candy blue".
I should have said from the outset that reverting to ab-original is an extremely difficult challenge so I'm just going to get it close.
I want to ride the thing, not have it in a display cage LOL!

Project Board / CB500K1. Cafe Racer to Original...sort of!
« on: May 25, 2017, 10:46:22 AM »
Hi all,

I haven't posted much about my restoration since getting the bike so I guess it's time to provide some info.
I'm in Perth, Western Australia and acquired a CB500K1 which was converted to cafe racer style some 4 or 5 years ago.  The bike was in overall good nick but obviously some things needed to change to bring things back to original.

The duck-tail seat, lo-rise handlebars and mini speedo and tacho needed to be replaced.  Fortunately there were quite a few useful odds and ends that I got with the bike, and a subsequest purchase of a box of bits from another Perth local.  :)

So as it stands now, I have a seat (original base and foam covered with a DSS cover), a new set of RHS and LHS switches (another story... >:( ) , a new handlebar and a bunch of other things like rear footpegs, new headlight and surrounds and a new 2-stay front fender.

I've been cleaning up the wiring loom and connectors, along with some other bits.

A close friend is restoring the instrument faces for me, so they'll be ready before long.  8)

And now to today!

I removed the “sub-frame” containing the reg, rectifier, blinker relay and solenoid in order to clean things up.
The sub-harness turned out to be an absolute dog’s breakfast….one of the multipin connectors was missing altogether!
Thanks to the CMSNL diagrams I soon figured out that the rectifier module no longer had a multipin connector on it.  Instead, it was sloppily spliced into the sub-harness, with some of the connections just twisted together (no solder) and wrapped with cheap electrical tape. >:(

Once I realised that refurbishment was going to be difficult, I took a heap of photos.  They’ll help with putting things back together, along with the wiring diagrams.

I tinkered with the idea of getting hold of a replacement harness (which isn’t available anyway!) but then I’d have to source a multi connector for the rectifier.

I’ll strip the paint off the sub-frame tomorrow, respray same then set about putting things back together.  Won’t be too difficult, just not original….oh well!!  ;)

I'll try to remember to take more photos in future.  If you want to see what the bike looked like when I bought it,  here ya go!  8)

Thanks for the info everyone!  8)  Not sure whether the wife would like me bunging the loom in the dishwasher tho'!  ::)
Do it when she's out shopping for more clothes.  That normally takes hours.
LOL!  ;D ;D

I managed to clean most of the gunk out today using cotton buds dipped in a bit of isopropyl alcohol.  Anything that was still a bit "sticky" came out with dry buds.  All looks good now....well, a whole lot better than before!!  ;D ;D

CB500/550 / Front fender (mudguard) - which bike?
« on: May 18, 2017, 09:58:13 AM »
The front fender on my cafe racer 500K1 is not original.  Does anyone know which bike(s) it would fit?
As I'm restoring to stock, I need to sell this off to defray the cost of a "proper" replacement.

CB500/550 / Clear plastic bullet covers-cleaning?
« on: May 18, 2017, 09:28:19 AM »
Hi folks, has anyone come up with a method of cleaning up the inside of the clear plastic bullet connector covers on the wiring harness?
My 500K1 harness is otherwise in good condition, but the inside of said covers, mainly from inside the h/light bucket is somewhat grotty!
Is there a simple way to clean them out, apart from flooding them with WD40!!  ;D
TIA
