CB750 / Re: Barrels and head painted or not?
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:51:31 PM »
Cheers for that Chris - your advice on here is greatly appreciated.  BTW I think UKPete now has the 'Bug'

Am I correct in assuming the valve cover is clear coated?

I know you use Simoniz 5-wheel silver  for the crankcases ( as I did on my 400/4 way back in '86) but what about the barells / head? Any recommendations?

BTW I found this on the early conrod replacement etc

http://data.sohc4.net/SB750/750_31.pdf

Interesting to note that all of the early rods were all matched to within 2.5grammes - perhaps it was to achieve the 'tumbler of water on the seat demo'

Have you ever used this stuff I mentioned in this post for rust treatment - its absolutely brilliant

CB750 / Barrels and head painted or not?
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:58:24 PM »
This is really a message for SteveD. Do you know if Eamon's K0 has painted head and barrels or not, as I think it was part of the same batch of UK750 imported in Jan '70 as mine. I am getting mine bead blasted  shortly but unsure if they were originally painted or not.

Cheers

All of the later tanks have some wrinkling but the original Sandcast ones / some K0 you can see the wrinkles whilst looking in the filler cap hole.

Hey Jock - take a magnet to your filler flap- if it is non-magnetic then on no account bin it because these are really rare K0 items and cost a fortune (LIKE 180 Euros !!! from Yamiya who call them 'Antimon'). Mine had one on and I have had it rechromed but its not perfect. Evidently they  pitted very quickly and replaced by the steel one.

This tank has appeared on Ebay BTW

Jock - if it has wrinkles visible through the filler cap then keep it and restore it whatever, as these are ultra rare. Mine does not have this feature although it was built in Oct 1969 and I am convinced it is the original tank shipped with the bike to the UK in Jan 1970.

The painter I used recommended Flowliner if the inside is rusty but you need to treat the rust first. I think some of the tank preps come with a rust remover (possibly phosphoric acid).

http://www.flowliner.co.uk/

Look here for help on the SOHC4 Us site. This is always your first stop for info.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?action=search2

Search for tank, rust, etc there is lots on there but it can take a bit of finding

If it is really bad and non wrinkle then a later tank should be available to restore on Ebay but make sure the tap is on the same side as yours as Honda switched sides on later bikes.

cheers

PS who is rebuilding your motor? what kind of condition was it in?

:D If you think I have it bad you ought to talk to the guy UK Pete bought his K1 from.

BTW they see plenty of me but spend their lives on Facebook!! And the wife is in a play at AmDram at the mo and it's too cold to work on the bike - plus i need a conrod!

+1 on that Pete they bought up Yahoo auctions years ago, which I thought was really good and prices were realistic.

There is a Chromer near me  in Hull which the M/C classic mags swear by but I found that the parts I stripped myself and polished came out great but the ones I left them to do were not so good.

BTW here is the 'Ashimoto' tip about checking if you have removed all of the nickel. You rub over with 'Coppering solution' used by old guys for marking out steel in the olden days. Anywhere there is still traces of  nickel will not be flash coppered. The copper is dead easy to remove because you need a cyanide electrolyte to copper plate properly onto steel (or some modern chemical complex).

With a large item like a rack though it may be best for them to deplate in their tank.  Be warned though - Plalting is not cheap and good platers are hard to find and when you do, they usually take the time they quote you  muliplied by Pi to get it done.

I think that after the initial 'wrinkle' Sandcast /  early K0  tanks, the shape was the same until the K7 (which is vastly different) but at some point the petrol tap (petcock) changed sides.

Not sure on K7 tank trim - never actually seen it on the bike. Perhaps someone else knows.
I did the same bit of detective work on a really nice K0 that went for 10k last year, he too had bought mini trim but the bike was spot on and probably  worth the money if you looked into the detail. If you look into a sellers history it can reveal sources of parts (like in the US/germany) that you may normally  overlook (like a cb250 camchain for a 750 or an oval UK rear lamp from a Honda C50/Cd175)

I also saw someone bid 150+ plus for the tank trim with the black stripes which was NOS Genuine Honda on Ebay recently. You can still buy this brand new from David Silver for a fraction of that price.

CB750 / Is this another Ebay bad deal
« on: February 27, 2010, 02:18:48 PM »
Don't want to mention any names here but I saw some 'K0/Sandcast' tank trims go on Ebay for over 80 quid last week.

Looking into history I saw purchase of mini car trim (as I suggested as a substitute for the original item  http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php?topic=2464.0)

The K0 / Sandcast does not have the black stripes in it. (interestingly the 'Brighton Show' bikes I think did have the black stripes)

The mini trim in the 'history' was:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310125757275

Bit cheaper than 80 quid !! and would be enough for several tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
