CB500/550 / Re: HONDA CB550 K3 FRONT FORK TUBES
« on: May 19, 2016, 06:56:18 PM »
I have an F1 and had trouble getting a fork stanchion for this model. Strangely cruzinimage did not list them on ebay.uk and bought 1off from Germany. Only found the cruzinimage ones by searching ebay Australia!
There are listed three different fork tubes for the CB550:
K1, K2: 51410374003
F1: 51410390003
K3, K4: 51410404003
The differences are to do with the oil damping holes and some forks have a rebound spring and some not, but I never did find all the details.
This pic from an ebay listing in the US gave some detail of parts that the F had over the K1.

I have a couple of the oil control valves. Think they came from a cb550, but are the same I think.
PM me if interested.

CB500/550 / Re: CB550K3 - Have I go the right bars?
« on: May 04, 2016, 12:31:53 PM »
Ok I think I know your problem.
I have an unrestored US K3 import sitting in my garage. The cables are routed to the LHS of the tank. The bars are 75cm tip to tip and about 11cm rise. Also restoring an F1. Just measuring the opening cable, the K3 cable is about 6cm longer.
Opening cable measuring the outer: Not including the 90 deg bend the K3 is 92cm to the end of the threaded section at the carbs. My F1 cable is 86cm.

Just cleaning up this bolt on my F1. It is a fine thread as standard M12 x 1.25.

CB500/550 / Re: Knocking forks
« on: April 12, 2016, 07:14:31 PM »
Old subject. But just getting my 500K1 ready for its first MOT in 10 years. I have the clunky forks when putting the bike on the c/s. I had one of these back in 1974 and I don't ever remember the clunk. But I had just come from 3 years of Triumphs so maybe anything was an improvement.
Is it the damper rod clunking against its endstop when extended and has anyone had an issue at MOT? Testers don't like clunks, but as already said on the c/s is not real world.
thanks

CB500/550 / CB550 Mainshaft crankcase plug
« on: March 07, 2016, 12:01:03 AM »
Advice please.
Engine all stripped down. Should I always replace the 34mm plug on the end of the gear mainshaft? Part no 91207-374-000. Any ideas why it is special order from DS? And what is the difference between the CB550 and the CB400 plug (91207-333-000)..they appear to be the same dimensions.

I also need the crankshaft seals and CMSNL do a set with all seals including the plug which seems cheap at 19 euros +VAT. If anyone has this set, are the crankshaft seals correct with the location flange at one end as the pics are rubbish?

Thanks folks. Phil

CB500/550 / Re: Primary Chain + F1 forks

Was looking at buying a bolt, but tool looks as if thread is turned off first couple of mm for location. Wheel bolt for Fiat Van is correct thread, amongst others I imagine. May try that.

Thanks Bryan, but a little far. I'll get the DS tool. At least it will have a re-selling value.

Bought my F from DK about 3 months ago. Looks straight and pretty pleased and my only surprise was the forks.
What have the done to that LHS footrest?

Just my luck.
Lower rear engine mounting 12mm. Ideal for using as slide hammer to withdraw primary shaft.
Swinging arm is 14mm
Rear axle is 18mm
Nothing on bike 16mm that I can fid.
And to cap it all. Yes I was looking at the tool on ebay but thought the 4-way device would be a better investment. David Silver sell an aftermarket one for about £25. It has been OOS for a while and I got fed up with waiting and ordered a load of stuff from him on Monday and did not bother to put it on back order as I thought I could not wait.  Stuff arrived Wednesday and yesterday they tell me the tool is back in stock and they charge £5.85+Vat for dely!!

Looks like David Silver may have had a complete set as seconds and they sold for £684, but only now has nos 1 & 3 left (as seconds).
These are "significantly reduced" so I suppose a full set for under £1k, we have to be grateful.
Anyone have experience of previous aftermarket exhausts?

Thanks Oddjob. I have already made two wooden frames/stands to sit the engines upside down. Have stripped the old spare CB500 engine I have had lying around for years. Haven't attempted to removed the rotor yet though as was looking to find a way round the without the tool, Is it a 16mm x 1.5mm pitch? Can't find anything here.
The actual engine I am re-furbing is for the 550 F1. I think that they are supposed to be slightly less prone to gouging the cases, but even at 31k the chain is making its mark. I think rough running engines can cause this.

I have a set of these in the garage with only one tiny crack to the outside world showing and a couple with loose baffles and can't make up my mind whether to leave them, or sell now and put the cash towards some aftermarket ones when they eventually reappear. I,m sure a few out there are thinking the same.
