CB350/400 / Re:hard neutral

Very common problem for which there is no real fix other than making sure the clutch is adjusted properly.

I always \"snick\" into neutral as I pull up - it's a habit that I've aquired over the past 30 years!

Hey Slade, that sounds like a good idea.  Do you have any more details (pictures would be cool) of the job. How do the new parts mount and did you have to fab any parts?

Send us something and we will put it in the FAQs.

Steve

This is a common problem reported by many 350-750/4 owners.
The best response was posted by \"TwoTired\" on www.sohc4.net in the Ignition FAQ.  If I can get a direct link I'll post it.

wuss = wimp...

I feel quite comfortable derailing this thread as John started it!

Sean - I'm going to have to refer you to www.sohc4.net - have a wander around there and look out for colour (they call it color ...). We have various sources of paint kits once you discover what you need.

Mid 50's put you smack in the middle of the average \"old Honda\" riders.
I'm just a kid (47) but we have 750 guys who are in their 70's and some who aren't even 20!

Pop over to www.sohc4.net and chat...

There's a site for the DOHCs: www.cb1100f.net - don't worry about the 1100 bit as the 750/900/100 were all pretty similar

An '82 750F would be the DOHC model so no expert I'm afraid!

As to whether a Superdream unit will fit - I doubt it.  The Superdream arrived a good three or four years earlier.

Are you really a Gran?

My 500 has a lock which the seat key fits (never used it though)

My 550 has a lock and a wierd-shaped \"J\" key - never used that either.

In general,

White smoke is moisture (when cold)
Black smoke is running rich
Blue smoke is oil

If you are burning oil it's either coming past the rings or past the valve guides.

I'd run a compression test, if #4 is low put a bit of oil down the plug hole and try again. If compression is now good, then you have a stuck (or broken) ring.

Looks pretty cool but as I don't speak Dutch I haven't a clue what it says!

I'm with Mike Rieck, a modern 530 chain is probably stronger than the duplex 520 of the 70's.

Can't say that I've ever heard of a duplex chain setup on one of these sohc Hondas.

Put the bike up on the centre stand and weigh down the back so that the front wheel is off the ground.
Grab the wheel and turn it from side to side to feel any \"notch\" or roughness.
Push/pull forward/back to check for looseness.

Easy

I agree. Get a set of taper roller bearings from David Silver.  They're a doddle to fit.

Do you want to do it yourself?
If so there are some excellent places to buy parts right here in the UK. The best is probably www.davidsilverspares.co.uk but there are others (and one or two in Holland/Germany.  You can get help and advice from here or from www.sohc4.net

If you are looking for a restoration shop to do the job for you, check out Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics.

I'm assuming from your email address that you are in the UK??
