FWIW you might find the spongy front brake improves with use or even overnight whilst standing - on my 400 & 500 as I used repacement DS master cylinders the lever has amost zero free travel.

I hope so - I get the impression that the sponginess is a characteristic of silicone fluid

Definitely not anything to do with the fluid imho.

That's looking great - I like the Delkevic exhaust system presumably SS as well.

I have also used Silicone fluid in both systems using a syringe to push fluid up from the caliper until it appeared in the reservoir - nipped up then filled from the top. I have to admit it took some pushing  on my 300 cc syringe.

CB350/400 / Re: New Triumph 400???

Not that I'm in the market but if I was 30 years younger I would be thinking a small 270 deg Twin would be a good option.

My memory of my Triumph 21 was  of hand numbing vobration through the bar grips as well as the oil puddles it left everywhere I rarked it - my 250 single Viscount prior Scooter was a mobile Bum massage. Both my Honda 250 Dreams - the standard & SS seemed to be vibration free.

I did wonder if J-B original cold weld (2 part) would work as an alternative as I have some left over from a previous repair job?

I was lucky as my 400 seat was in good condition - I assume it's not original as the base is a heavy type of plastic - the rear Logo looks if it was done when new

That's a real bummer, is it the original petrol tank?

« on: July 25, 2024, 05:45:43 PM »
Can't remember the Brand now, when I was in the car trade Circa 1978 we retailed an oil additive from the USA ( like Slick 50) that was a one time use product that cost about £25.

I tried to convince myself it worked as it used to make my car engine idle speed rise. Many have come and gone since.

Ceramic is the new Buzzword hence I have some Ceramic Wax.
For a while Nano Technology ruled new product launches - suspect a lot of it is pseudo science.

It was very stressful at the time within 5-10 minutes of the fire starting we were homeless. The flames through the rear of the roof were a good 20 ft high. Three Fire Engines were used to fight the blaze. One Fireman was on a platform directing the water hose onto the roof, a second and third were wearing BA sets putting water inside the loft through a hatch on the landing ceiling whilst a third eventually entered the rear bedroom.

Due to the volume and weight of water all the ceilings in the rear half of the house collapsed. The fire started at about 7.35 pm, they were damping down for a good three hours. Due to the toxic fumes  inside the house it was a week before we could have the contents cleared and put into storage. When I entered the house the following  day  later to retrieve our car keys I was violently sick on exiting  the kitchen. Wendy lost all her clothes that she kept in the rear bedroom that was used as a dressing room so the next day we had to shop for undies etc.
We lived in rented accommodation until July 2018. With the fire being in November 2017 the building contractors were not appointed until late January. A temporary Tarpaulin was fitted over the rear half if the roof a few days after the fire. Drying out took the best part of 5-6 weeks with Industrial Dehumidifiers.

Ted, I replaced about half of the threads on my spare 400/4 carbs with helicoils. I use Loctite 648 when inserting then trim off any helicoil AFTER it has cured with the ol' dremel.

Okay Matt, I have tapped out the two dodgy carb bowl threads so next I need to fit the coil inserts.
It was harder than I imagined to keep the Tap at 90 deg to the carb body - I now have some new  threads.
I like the idea of giving the coil insert some extra intergrity using Loctite or similar.

With the Loctite 648 - is there any danger that the Loctite will seep through the coils and cause an issue?

I did have a photo my Dad took of me all togged up one Sunday afternoon in November/December 1967 as I was leaving for Chester - Mum was in the background quietly telling me to be careful as she held back her tears.
The photo of Tony reminded me that I also wore a pair of huge brown Gauntlets that almost reached my elbows for winter riding - pulling the clutch in & braking were extra heavy to overcome the leather reistance. I'm pretty sure they were ex-AA Patrolmans.

Sadly no photo as it was amongst those we lost in our house fire in Nov 2017.https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/derby-news/police-involved-case-littleover-home-783750

. The Chihuahua I am holding in the photo in the link was Percy RIP, the one Wendy is holding is Mitzie who was pregnant at the time - she is still going strong at 10 yrs of age - we kept two of her Pups.

Back in my youth (1967) when I used to commute at weekends from Derby to Chester on my 250 Dream I had a pair of black Bib & Brace over trousers.
I suspect they were Army surplus - I looked like a Fisherman on a Trawler.

When you are a male  over 70 years old everything gets harder except for one thing.
Blokes over 70 know what that one thing is.😁😁😁

CB500/550 / Re: What is the length of this part?
« on: July 24, 2024, 11:44:27 AM »
Is that the spacer that fits inside the left side wheel bearing?
Max supplied me with that & both outer rear wheel spacers for my 500.
That's a 550 part so I can't help with dimensions.
