Title: Bearing Manufacturer choice
Post by: Matt_Harrington on August 06, 2023, 05:56:14 PM
Is there much to choose between SKF, NTN etc when selecting new bearings for the primary shaft on a 400/4. I'm not trying to get the cheapest just decent bearings. I notice that some NTN bearings are made in Taiwan rather than Japan - this maybe irrelevant......

NTN, SKF and KOYO all OEM standard bearings, they are all excellent. Some bearing you can only get from Honda but the 400/4 primary is available in the correct type from any of the above mentioned, if I remember correctly 🤔🤔🤔

Back in the 1980s if I needed a wheel bearing etc I would take what I had to show at the counter of a bearing manufactor in Lewisham and they would provide an identical one that was British made and much cheaper!

A lot of Japanese manufactures have moved to Taiwan since the 90's, including Riken, NTN and many more  ;)

Back in the 70's it was cheaper to get a Honda part with 20%discount than a british with 65%discount for wheel bearings

The bearing grade makes a fair difference to the price of a bearing.  eg SKF 6205 c3 is £3 and a SKF 6205 C5 is £12. Anyone know what grades
    Honda use in the engines.

Snap ring ones are getting a little costly now.

C3 Chris. I can't remember ordering anything other than C3 for any of the engines.

I just wondered if they were using owt different C3 is pretty much what you would call a standard bearing.

More modern bike with higher revving engines have more clearance. I have a bearing data book somewhere for motorcycles up to the year 2005 but, have not looked at it in years as they keep changing with higher revving engines on the gear box. All SOHC engines are happy with C3 Chris ;)
