CB500/550 / Re: twin disc conversion
« on: August 26, 2013, 07:32:33 PM »
In that case you will need the slider from a 550 or a PAIR of forks from a 550 (internals vary so fitting just one complete fork is not advisable) plus if you look at the other thread on twin discs I linked a word document with a How To.

Thanks Bryanj,  I downloaded your instructions, and am sourcing parts, are 550 fork tubes the same Diameter as the 500,and will they
fit my original yokes?can I just swap the 550 sliders onto my forklegs and internals?
thanks for your help,

all of you

back to feebay to explore more ;D

hi all,

as you can see from my profile pic,I have a well used 500,

for the past 6-8yrs I have used Avon Roadrider 90/90 x 19 f,and 100/90 x 18 rear,

as both need changing,
I am going for the new Dunlop Streetsmart 3.25 x 19 F,and 4.00 x18 R,

both sets run at 29psi F,and 36 psi R,

the Avons make the bike feel light and nimble, like a little 250,gives me confidence to touch the footrest and stand, hopefully the
new Dunlops will be as good, and even better,my rear is lasting up to 3k miles, the front about 8k, :) :)

what tyres do you prefer??

this is aimed mainly at the owners that ride the bike, rather than just polish and  show them,

all comments welcome

John

I know this is headed CB750 exhausts,

but the 500/550  Hm 323 are short supply,DS has none,CMSnl has sets, very expensive,

I asked a guy at DS,he said they were looking to get sets made, but no information yet,

mine are 20yrs old,and getting scruffy, can expect then to corrode soon

CMsnl 500 sets are 1808 euros,on their conversion,£1,555  VAT included

must get my piggy bank filled

Tricks & Tips / Re: Front Brake Adjustment
« on: August 12, 2013, 06:09:41 PM »
 hi ,

 I have CB500-4

I had problems of the brake rubbing to much, pads not retracting,

I cured it by replacing the piston seal, nice fresh and flexible,it pulls the piston back
a treet,
also,if you remove the spring from the adjuster, and let the caliper move as it needs,it
inproves the braking,

the seal cost about £3.50 ish

Always worth posting events! I'd love to do the Yeovil one as it's only 40 mins up the road, but recently had major surgery for colon cancer, not even allowed to lift a full kettle at the mo! And I've been told unlikely to be able to ride again this side of xmas >:( so I've missed the best spell of biking weather for years!

hope you get well soon,

sorry you seem to be missing the warm, sunny days and dry roads,

for those tat are interested,
the Yeovil event is 15th september.

hi al

I recently posted about the Calne bike day,

in about 5,000 bikes,only 2 SOHC Hondas,and 1 was mine,

there is a bike day at Brackley ,Northhampton,on the 18th august,

also at Sparkford ,near Yeovil, home of the Haynes museum,

do any of you guys use your bikes?

want to meet informally,

do you want more info?
I live near welsh border,about 80miles from Calne,and Brackley,and 100 from Yeovil.

other venues are about,

what do you think?

is it worth posting a few events??

mine have lasted well,

I get about 4,500 from the rear, and just about run 3 rears to one front !!

the front will need changing soon,

the walls are ok

as I said, love the grip, can ground the footrest on roundabouts, and very stable on fast open roads,
still running original rear shocks after 52K and 39 yrs

great bike,

if you swop the tyres,I use the avons, roadrider AM 26 front and rear, running 29psi front and between 33-36 psi rear,
they have transformed the handling, very sharp, great edge grip, and wet/greasy grip,

recently got some FA013 EBC pads, after servicing the caliper, and new fluid, found them very dissappointing, until a ride in heavy rain,
this seemed to clean the pads,so much better now,

enjoy the summer, and ride as much as your can,

hi all

went to the Calne bike day,

was amazed that there were so few Sohc bikes there,

apart from my CB500/4 ,I only saw one other,a late model CB650 custom,

no 400's,usually very plentifull,neither any 750's,

took me all day to walk around enjoying the day,

well worth a visit,a great charity day out,

CB500/550 / Re: running on unleaded !!
« on: July 17, 2013, 09:23:09 PM »
Thats not detanation as the cause, what happens is some idiot PO reved the nuts off it when cold and the rings expand to quickly so the top one shatters into pieces, this widens the ring groove then flame passage and heat finish it off.

Used to happen quite a bit on 250K4 and CB175's
I had exactly this on a 550 years ago.  My friend bought a bike that had been standing for a year or so.  Unfortunatley, the seller had taken the bike for a blast to make sure all working OK.  My friend bought the bike but soon complained that it wasn't running properly and was smoking.  When I investigated I discovered that there were broken rings on all four cylinders.  Luckily, they had stayed in place and not scored the bore and a new set was all that was needed.

 thanks for the hints !!

I can't remember racing it when cold,

BUT,from now on will keep it below about 5k for a couple of miles at least,

thanks

John
