I've done that run Hubert - on the 'Wing and also on my C125 Super Cub and as you say, it's lovely!  We are so lucky with some great riding scenery and although not exactly on our doorstep, we don't have to ride out through very busy places to get there.

Exactly those sizes Sean,
And perhaps I cheated a bit with slight chamfer on the end of the tube to 'encourage' the clip to open a bit.  As you say, not the easiest of jobs and I would think impossible with the kickstart arm on the engine - for me, it had to be clamped firmly (near vertical) in the vice and I also put a piece of hardwood under the bottom end, so I could 'give it some'.  You are not going on far so perhaps you could open a tube out a bit with a Dremel and even include the chamfer.

Hi Sean,
I've just done one on this Sloper I'm sorting for a friend.  As you say, not the easiest of tasks.  Fortunately I have a lathe, so I turned a piece of tube and drilled it to be a good sliding fit on the post.  I then clamped the kickstart arm in the vice with soft jaws to protect it.  Assembled the swivel arm and washers with plenty lube and placed the offending circlip over the post and seated it with the short piece of tube by a deft clout with a hammer.   If you don't have access to machine facilities, or know someone who has, perhaps you could hunt around for a piece of suitable tube.

For Laverda Dave and anyone else interested in Orkney or contemplating a trip, this is a short piece about the barriers on a local website:

Hello Hubert,
I must admit that the bike I got from James provided a great starting point as it was mostly unmolested.  With help and parts from many forum members and a large tin of elbow grease, I'm very pleased with the result.  The rack and top box - yes, I know not for the purists are very quickly detachable - without disturbing indicators but I want to use this bike for longer trips and don't like throw-overs or having stuff held on with bungees.  On the other theme of Gareth's proposed 'treffen' do you want to liaise regarding a stop-over on the Sunday?

Hi Dave,
The Churchill Barriers (4 in total) were built during WW2 after a German Sub got through the blockship barrier to enter Scapa Flow and sank the Royal Oak with the loss of many hundreds of lives.  Churchill brought about the building of 4 barriers linking Islands to the south of the Orkney Mainland to prevent such a thing being repeated.  Much of the work was carried out by Italian POWs, who also built the World famous Italian Chapel.  Eventually roads were constructed on the barriers so you can now travel from Holm to Burwick which previously had to be done by boat.  I'm sure Johnny will chime in with more info - don't think he (or Churchill) helped build them though!

Great to see and hear it running again Johnny - how many years dormant?  Will that be yet another of your exhibits at this year's shows?  A nice board with all that Orkney history alongside would be very welcome - at Dounby Show too.

I managed to do a workaround for today's pics.  I emailed them to myself and had the choice of keeping original size or reducing when attaching.  Picked reduce, then saved them to photos and they were about 1Mb, down from 4.1.
Apologies to Steve, perhaps best not to increase permitted size - the 'slack' might be needed for something else.

We'll do our best John - was quite warm but still had a choppy wind.

Managed to cut the grass first thing, so felt that I had earned a ride out.  Passing a friend's place about a mile away, he was just wheeling his CRF Rally out, so with nowhere in mind we set off together and went out around the north of the Mainland (of Orkney) via Costa and Evie, into Finstown and on a whim (thought you said it was a 550?) headed for the Barrier View cafe just by the first Churchill barrier.  Suitably fed and watered, Les led us out via the Airport, back through town and then had a gentle pootle back home.  Really enjoyable impromptu ride of just under 60 miles.

Hi Johnny,
That was the iphone today, but that synced with the ipad which is where I started to put the post earlier - easier than the small phone keyboard.  Still don't know why the system doesn't have a resize facility now,

Hi Steve,
Yes 5Mb would be enough - until Apple beggar about with the next iphone.  Do you have any idea why the resize facility disappeared?

Ian

Forgot to say, when I did a screenshot of the pic it went from 4.1 Mb to 10.8!

Thanks Johnny,
I'll give it a try - I was just out on the 550 today and wanted to post a bit about the trip.

Hi folks,
I've been using the picture resizing facility when posting but it seems to have disappeared now.  I usually take pics with iphone or ipad which are often over the 3Mb limit and in the past you were able to choose a smaller size after you had selected the desired image.  Is there an easy way around this?

Hi Gareth,
If all goes to plan I will be back in plenty of time from my little jaunt to Germany and Austria on the Forza, so should be able to use the 550 for the trip.  I think I might stay somewhere nearby for a night either side.  How long were you planning on staying after we've all got fed and watered?  I could probably stay at my Sister's place in Aberdeenshire and catch the Ferry home  the next day
