hello all,
hopefully now we are at the end of february, the temperature will increase, the daylight hours grow longer, the roads dryer,
all things to make us smile,
Today I had my first decent ride without getting wet or frozen

a nice little pub/restaurant about 3 miles south of Abergavenny on the old A40 Raglan road,
feel free to add posts and pics of your favorite rideouts

hopefully,if the weathers good, this year I will pop down to Cornwall, and west wales around Aberystwith, maybe north wales
near Port Madoc,and nr Bournemouth,on 14th June,
I am lucky enough to have retired,so this boring old fart is planning to enjoy my free time !!
its so much fun, should have done years ago !!
remember "work" is a 4 letter word!!!
-
Hi John, I have been to the Steel Horse but also go to the Owls Nest Tearoom in Llandovery. Maybe we will bump into each other sometime. :)
-
never been to Llandovery, but looking on the map, could be a nice loop from Brecon to Llandovery to Builth
hope to see you around, ride safe ,and have fun
-
;) yes done all em places great rides
you guys might want to try rhayader via the elan valley to aberystwyth
also over the black mountains too llandovery
and llandovery wells via beulah to builth wells
in llandovery there is the west end cafe ,bikers been going there for years
-
well, spring is coming (hopefully) and here are some more rideout venues ,
http://www.bikersnite.com/pub-list.php
can't wait for the long summer days and warm (hot) dry tarmac !!!!
-
Thanks John. See you there :).
-
Hi Chaps
1st proper ride out yesterday, Dungeness to Eastbourne. Bike felt really good, back end feels very tight and stable with the new Swing arm bushes I fitted. Had to have a slight adjustment on the front brake as they started grabbing after a while. No problems with carbs at all after replacing all the internals. All in, bike ran like a dream. Brilliant day out.........looking forward to many more.

-
I'm SO relieved the carb clips are the right colour ::) that I can forgive the way you've mounted the horn.
Seriously - great job!! :D
-
the sun is shining,I took the Honda for its first decent run,
about 150 miles,
hereford-Hay-Brecon-Llandovery-Builth-Llandrindod-Kington then home,
took a few pics, and will download them soon
great roads, lots of bikes about, these roads are perfect for the smooth sohc !!!
come out and enjoy the fun !!
the pics are,
no 1,just outside Brecon, looking south at the Brecon Beacon,
no 2,biker cafe in Llandovery,
no 3, Biker cafe at Crossgates, north of Llandrindod Wells,
no 4,about 5 miles east of Kington, looking southeast towards Herefordshire and Glouscester, typical roads of the area
-
Nice looking bike Julie glad you are out and about wish I could join you but 500 plus miles is pushing it a bit.Dont recall you having problems with the carbs ;) ;)
Cheers

Thanks Raph, Bryan and Tom.
Ralph. You are right, I didn't have a problem as such with the carbs. I took the tops and bottoms off to give them a good clean and the bodies were bloody filthy rot. In the end I took them off and had them put in the ultrasonic cleaner and that is when I ended up with all the white crusty deposits which kept re appearing. Anyways, by this time I thought I may as well overhaul them and got a kit from Crusinimage and replaced everything. It least I know they are all OK now and won't need doing again for the foreseeable. And at least I have a good idea of how they work now, so that's a bonus ;D ;D ;D
-
Well done Julie - bike's looking lovely and glad you had a good ride out.
James.
-
Nice looking 400/4 Julie.
How long did the cruzinimage stuff take to arrive?
Tim
-
Delivery was very quick Tim, maybe 4-5 days if I remember correctly.
-
That's good to know, I've got a few bits to order.
-
I am lucky enough to live right in the middle of some of these great roads, Crossroads Cafe, Builth and Aberystwyth are all about 35 miles from my door, though I normally constrain myself to the 20 miles or so to and from work these days thanks to the time constraints of kids and work. I think I may have to invest in proper carb overhaul, the more I read about the cruising immage kits, sounds better than putting up with so many leaks or having to dose so heavily with redex.
-
Julie,John bikes look great. 8) 8)
I used mine unexpectedly today I'v been working in Cambridge and we have been parking up just out side of the town and riding the last 2.5 miles in on a CG125.We were rushed off site at the end of the day and when we got back to the car and realized my dad had left the keys at work I was in hysterics ;D ;D until I realized I had to sit on the back of the 125 :o after an agonizing 50 miles later we got home. Then we realized my dad needed the car tomorrow so we jumped on the 750 and road back to Cambridge I can now confirm after four and a half hours and 150 miles that the cheap coils I bought for the 750 on ebay work a treat, pillions are comfortable unless on a CG and the 70's headlight is complete crap.

John I'll be there but probably on the Gixer .

On the subject of carb parts, how do the cruzinimage kits compare to the Keyster kits?
-
On the subject of carb parts, how do the cruzinimage kits compare to the Keyster kits?
Keyster 100%, Cruzinimage 90% but, the price reflects this.

John
Lots of photos please ;D

home early, got about 2/3rds of the way and lost all electrics, turns out a solder joint/wire fell off the back of the ignition switch, managed
to make a circuit using a safety pin pushed through two wires, and came home,
so no pics,no BBQ,and no burgers,
will need to check the joints on all 4 cables,
the switch is only just over 12 months old, really annoying
-
Oh dear. Good luck with that. That's about the 4th time I've been expecting to meet you John but we're never at the same meets. It was heaving but cold. Took one photo which is too big at the moment.
-
Shite John thats bad news.Never mind hope your bike is sorted now. ;)

all sorted,I even re-soldered the other wires incase they were "dry" joints or weak,
this was after a great 150 mile ride around mid-wales a week earlier,
fingers crossed, every thing seems ok now,so looking forwards to next wednesday evening -))))
-
Used a few Cruzinimage kits now and I would say that if you throw away the float valves they are 100%. Everytime I use the float valves I cannot stop the leaks. And its not just one carb, they take it in tuns to empty your tank. I use the kits and pay for genuine Honda valves. Seems to work.
-
I thought it interesting Trigger preferred the Keyster. I've heard from other people that they are rubbish . Actually on my own bike I just needed o-rings and float valves. I got a viton ring kit off eBay and genuine valves. No problems.
-
after last wednesdays fun and games, just checked next week weather forecast, and it looks even better,
the meet is near to Tewkesbury/Cheltenham,,so I intend to be there, fingers crossed !!!

come along and have fun !!
-
Yeah Tried keyster a couple of years back wernt impressed needles are all wrong had to fit clip at the next to bottom so the slide would fully close without sticking.Put the old hondas back.
Was for 750 k though.Read some where supposed to have got better now.

after a little issue last wednesday, all seems perfect, quick potter around Abergavenny in the sunshine,
hopefully more on wednesday near Tewkesbury,
-
after more issues with the ignition switch, road tax and the DVLA,finally got around for a rideout,
so,the first "numb" bum of the year !!
nice little run, about 115 in total, see the pics,
first is at Brobury, about 13 miles west of Hereford,
the other at the Elan Valley,nr Rhyader ,were thousand of victorian workers and engineers built a series of Dams
to supply water to Birmingham,
-
Elan Valley Pt 2,
purely because I need two posts for 6 pics
-
I love the Elan Valley. I've been on bikes and in a car (with the Mrs)
It's the perfect antidote to those miles of open sweeping A roads that they have in Mid Wales.

My advanced bikers club (www.tvam.org) go there twice per year. We book out the Commodore Hotel in Llandrindod Wells and 75 of us go.

Right on my doorstep. For Elan valley I know a company who can let you really explore, they provide trailbikes, all the gear and as much tuition as you need and a guide ( or 2 or more if there is a lot of you, that is sometimes my job ) Trail rides Wales if you fancy a trip on the rough stuff. They are based a few miles up the road and using their knowledge of the trails you can go from Elan Valley right to just outside Aberystwyth and up the coast and over the hills to Harlech in north Wales ( probably 2 days of riding for all that, using lanes and tracks, they match the routes to the ability of the riders so it can be gentle forest tracks to full on nuts rutted stuff depending on what you want) Sorry for being a bit off topic but couldn't resist mentioning it, it makes for a brilliant way to further explore this bit of Wales. I reacon they could even find secure covered parking for your bikes.... if not I could.
-
out again,
nice run down the A466 to Chepstow, stopped at Tintern,I didn't wreck the place, then on the River Severn estuary,on the south shore
between the two bridges
it was a little breezy over the bridge, had a good angle of lean!!

Lovely pictures, the scenery is fantastic. I love most bikes but the Trident outside the cafe is just beautiful, had a few in the past along with Bonnies and I miss them all :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
very nice VTX, had a 1800 in 2013, great bits of kit
-
looks a great area to explore,
maybe in the future I will get up there,
just out of interest, fuel consumption ,when I am out having fun,(on the bike) I normally get 10 miles per litre, works out at 45 mph,
unless I hurry, when it drops to around 42 mpg,
that gives me about 106 from fill up to reserve, its been like that for years, got worse a few years ago,but a fresh air filter improved
it again, are these numbers typical ?,how do your bikes compare ?
-
hi all, anyone going to the meet at Ledbury tonight??
the weather has improved,-))))
so I intend to go for a pint and burger(s) ,
http://www.bikersnite.com/pub-list.php
-
Tell them all to keep out of the way of the Downtons trucks delivering to UBL at the next roundabout as they have 96,000 empty glass bottles in them!! makes a hell of a mess in an accident and the fall over easy if you break hard!!!
-
yup,did that for you Brian,
very nice crowd, lots of shiny ,and not so shiny bikes
saw the CB750 cafe racer again, also I think a standard CB750 ,in golden yellow was there, only glimsed it as it left,
any one we know ??
a few pics
-
the 750 cafe racer,
and the trusty 500

Nice pics again John, I'm sure Bitsa would agree.

Looks like you are having lots of fun this year John. Unlike yourself, I am totally unorganised and never take a camera with me on my travels. I did the Tour de Kent today. Home to Ashford, Canterbury, Sandwich (no sandwiches found there !!), Deal, Walmer, Dover, Folkestone, Hythe and back home. I was moving a lot faster than the Trucks stuck in Operation Stack on the bottom end of the M20 ;D ;D ;D. Have managed to get out 2 or 3 times a week recently for nice long rides. Looking forward to many more this year.
Julie :-* :-* :-*

I got out on my Kettle on sunday for a ride through the trough of Bowland , and tonight I was out on my Honda VTX 1300, I went up into the Lake district to Windermere and Ambleside , then back down through Kendal, Milnthorpe and Carnforth, then onto Morecambe Promenade :-)

Nice bike's John, looks like it was nice and sunny.
-
it was Trig,
I got there around 10,30 ish,and it was a little quiet, blamed it on the wet friday,
but as the day progressed,it filled up,looked like they were arriving till mid afternoon,
its a great event, totally relaxed and cool, well behaved, the whole town seems to welcome the bike/bikers,
put it on your "bucket" list of meets to visit,
sunday was totally different, soaking wet, between drizzel and heavy, good news is the new plug caps and coils/HT leads worked
perfectly,
but !! and a big BUT,
the David Silver pattern disc pads are not much good in the wet, below about 50,and in traffic ,you need to keep dabbing the brake, dry and heat the disc up,
above 50 not quite so much, above 70 ish its ok,guess the higher spin rate drys the disc,
so,be carefull,if your out in the wet,
anyone suggest a better wet weather pad ??
with standard discs
-
I have DSS cheepo pads I find them OK in the wet scratch your disk it makes a difference. Its two up riding when I find it hard to stop.
-
I did see your bike but not you! I really liked the bike though, ( pretty sure it was your bike as same steps it was parked by I think - about 100 yards down the street from kings arms. ) neat twin disk job and same covered chain guard as I intend fitting? It was a good day and deffinately worth a visit though car parking was limmited a bit and the kids were so excited by the bikes and live music that they were a handfull.
-
where were you tonight John ?
anyway i was at the the 5 Mile House on the 417

What a beauty.....I will never forget seeing my first CB400F at a Motorcycle Show at Belle Vue in Manchester......ruby red with gold striping on the tank.....and those four splendiferous sweeping exhaust pipes......just absolutely ferkin gorgeous.
I have to admit that my passion is big bikes with dirty great stonking back tyres (or I don't feel safe), but if I was to buy a small bike....it would probably be a CB400F....or a CB72....or a CB77....or a CB92........I know that you'll forgive my ranting.......
The secret of successful House Hunting is to use Rightmove to save your legs and to find a really knowledgeable Estate Agent who has been around forever and tell him/ her EXACTLY what you are looking for and EXACTLY what you DON'T want. Let them get on with it and do the donkey work. You will be amazed at what they turn up cos they don't like time wasters either and will go all out to get a sale once they know what you want.
-
also a meeting at
The Walwyn Arms Inn, Much Marcle, Ledbury
for the VMCC Sunday.
fancy that John? its closer to you.

Out and about on the Isle of Man. Really good weather for a change.
Point of Ayre on the Northern most tip of the Island. Next land mass, Scotland.

Parked up at Port Erin.

Wouldn't be the same without a cup of tea now would it. A beautiful wooded spot on the slopes of Snaefell.

Back to the hotel for yet more tea. My mate calls it the "Teapot Grand Prix".

Lovely F2 there Roy. Exhaust is "close to original" look... :)
-
Actually Tom, it's not as good as it looks. The pictures make it look as new but it really isn't. Pretty rough in places but it's a low mileage survivor so I don't upgrade anything, just repairs. The exhaust was on it when it came to me, and the PO has had it plated and welded together where the silencer meets the headers. Rot I assume, and I don't think it's going to last much longer. Will have to be replaced with a stainless Motad. Shame really as it sounds really good.
-
Didn't the original F2 have a black end-cap on the exhaust?
-
It did indeed. Its been fitted with a replica exhaust silencer at some point in its life. Wish they still sold it as its very close to the original. The headers are standard F2 though.
-
out tonight in Tewkesbury, very overcast, only slight drizzle so thats ok,last Biker nite for 2015,think about £10k approx raised for
West Mid air ambulance,
glad I sorted the charging and 2-3 cutting out ,the bike ran like a dream,so a few pics ,(from a new phone)
-
final pics from 2015 Biker nite
-
sorry John, i could not make it her in doors had another opp :-(
-
went for a ride out yesterday, can't waste this lovely sunny weather,
a couple of favourite roads, and a new one,
down to Monmouth, then alone the Wye Valley on the A466,very scenic -)))
got to Chepstow ,and turned right onto the B4235 to Usk,WOW,never ridden this road, mostly well surfaced, full of inclines and bends,
it will warm up your brakes, and give lots of down change practise -))))
then from Usk to Abergavenny and home,
sorry no pics, but hope we can enjoy the weather while we can

I saw this lovely 750 racer at a trackday at Assen on Monday.
-
Not a 750 unless its been over-bored. Looks a bit like a 650 engine although I'm no expert on them.
If it's a Pukka racer I think I would do a bit better on the brake front.
Really nicely turned out bike though, a credit to it's owner. Shame all race bike aren't as good as that.
Got me thinking about the next project now, that's quite inspiring. A plan is hatching. :-X :-X
-
my thoughts are an 550,
would be nice with four pipes, black or chrome,
always prefer 60's style racers with 4 L/S drum fronts
but,yes,its very tidy
-
Yes good point. I assumed it was a 750 but actually does look more like a 550 and it was quite slow on the track. It had a Dutch owner but I never managed to catch up with him.
-
I know, I know, it's not a SOHC Honda :o :o :o :o SORN'd Hettie, the 400/4 the other day, so had to take the Thundercat out today. Lovely warm, sunny ride up to Beachy Head. Although it didn't feel like it, I actulally did just under 4000 miles on Hettie this year, totally drama free and good fun. Need to start packing bikes and bits up soon ready for the move up to the Lincolnshire Wolds, so lots of new roads to investigate next year, which I'm looking forward to very much.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Ooooops, here's the picture (bloody Windows 10 !!!)
-
looks a lovely day,
be care full in Lincs, watch out for hills,
I hope to do a few more rides before it gets to cold and wet,
saw this place on a BBC 4 prog, thought it worth a visit
http://www.internalfire.com/
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I did say 'Wolds' John, so there are hills, OK, they may not be much higher than speed ramps compared to what you have over your way of course. Anyway, I have purchased a new Ordinance Survey map so I can navigate around the hills if I feel the need and the 400/4 starts struggling with the inclines.
-
Who's lovely little SOHC 250 is that ;D ;D ;D
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bit late I know but have you caught up yet Graham ;)

Very funny Mick, if it is a tight, bendy road, then the cat will be in my mirrors ;D ;D

and the Steel Horse,nr Abergavenny,

Peter lives in Salisbury, his idea of a long ride,is to Sammy Miller Museum and back,
the chances of getting him into Wales are between slim, and nil !!
mind you,you need Honda quality to ride over distances !!!

I was out on my 750 yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours ;) cheers Mick.

I hope to get out on the Katana on Saturday - providing it passes the MOT on Friday. It'll be the 1st MOT for 12 years, the culmination of a months of rebuilding and fettling. I'll let you know how I get on. We could meet up for a ride in Abergavenny sometime.
-
Wow a Katana. Were going to need some photos of that Mike. Good luck with the MOT.

Thanks Roy. I'll do a montage of before, during and present when I get around to it.

I filled the tank with fresh juice, took about 10 minutes of cranking with jump leads on the van battery and it's finally running. It hasn't run for at least a year and certainly not with the new exhaust system so I'm well pleased with it. MOT on Friday. 99

Chucking it down and blowing some out this way. I am going soft, the car is getting used over the bike half the time to go to work, new job means starting before daylight and finishing after dark.

Blowing a right hooley here in Dungeness. Bikes all packed up ready for the final move to Lincolnshire Tuesday. Took some up by trailer the other day also with a load of other stuff. Can't wait till the first nice day to start exploring the area on a bike (I get the feeling it won't be any time soon) :'( :'( :'( :'(

Welcome to winter 2015. Us people in Wales get it first and worst. The Englanders just get our leftovers.
I was going to use the Katana yesterday as the rain wasn't too bad but the sodding thing refused to start. 15 mins of cranking, aided by jump leads, total waste of time. The 400four (which is SORNed) started first prod. Just goes to show why Hondas are tops.

Yes Mike, will be living on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds so all up hill and down dale, nothing compared to where you live but, still plenty of hills and valleys

I will enjoy John, very much. I have now taken early retirement so will have plenty of time to go out and about and have fun.

Blowin'a gale here too. Two ridge tiles came off my roof and smashed the bungalow next doors roof :( :-[ :'( :'(.. bloomin winter.
-
Last week I lost the roof off one of my sheds, luckily we moderately recently bough the bit of woods the roof fell onto so I just needed to bung it back on.
