Added a new CB750 to my collection :)
A US import 1978 K8.
Picked up today.
Engine was out, as PO found seized, various bits missing.
Not tried an import before, have NOVA paperwork.
I can hear Davis Silver rubbing his hands :P

Havnt fully decided the standard I am looking to achieve, as I know these are not so much in demand and I dont like spending more than they are worth, but usually do :-[
Will certainly get frame and black painted parts powder coated and zinc plate all the sound fittings.

I have a alternator cover not 100 percent but would say 98 though.If the throttle cables are the same for low bars uk have them too one new one used but good chrome.I also have a k7 master cylinder works fine but needs new seals.Instruments have various if you want photos can do tommorrow.Have a complete rear light but lens cracked good condition

Does the K7 master cyl have provision for stop light switch?

No the stop switch is located on the splitter on the lower fork yoke.I have seen this type on the USA eBay site though.

Lots of parts better than expected and rear mudguard chrome is quite good.
Generally seems quite original, but quite a few bits missing.
Thought it was a Black tank, but is in fact a very dark maroon metallic.

Wiring and HB switches very poor, looks like UV damage, the plastic connector housings are crumbling!

That is a good base of a restore.You will have a little problem of finding some parts but on the whole done worse than you have.

That is a USA or Canadian import, never available in the UK. Parts are hard to find for the K8 in the UK. Must of got that one cheep. What is the engine Number?

Its CB750E 30530xxx x =hidden number
Lots of parts seem same, 405 middle part number number for this model

Started the strip, hoping to have frame etc ready for powder coaters Monday, so can be done before they close for Xmas :-\
May not work out if too many seized parts, but good to have a goal and something to keep me busy over break!
Just received some parts from cruzinimage (Ebay) from Japan.
Have used before and reasonable for pattern parts.

Hi number. Could you put a picture up of a piston from that engine? I want to see if it the same as the F2 ones. The F1 used two types of piston, some are from the early K and the latter ones have a dot instead of the arrow on the crown.

Parts list shows piston as 131013 392 020 so assume its the F1 type.
Does have a dot on piston, will take some pics

Have to say the plastic wire blocks are the worst I have seen Is it because acid have got to them? but I do have the fork bottoms

I got some standard size ones from Davis Silver for my F1 that had same pistons. They were £76 plus vat and P&P for full set, though :'(

Thats the ones they fit k7 and f2, the k8 is virtually the same as k7 so makes it easier when searching for parts
only problem with the rings is they only seem top do standard size

Too rich for me. DSS is well over priced these days. Just did a price check on 10 items from DSS and compared the same items with a German dealer that i use. The result was DSS was £83 more expensive.

DSS has all ways been more than most got to pay for the USA warehouse

Just realised I forgot to drop off the handle bar clamps :'(
The seat pan needs alot of work as cracked and rusted through :'(

Front brake caliper was the usual pain ::)
First the bleed nipple was seized, took lots of heating and soaking over 2 days, find a deep 8mm socket is good used with 1/4 drive ratchet to get a better feel and hopefully not snap nipple.
Feels a bit like playing Russian roulette getting these out :P
Once that was out, had to refit to try air pressure to push out piston.
Would not move, but managed to push piston in a bit but would not come out with air pressure, soaked with WD40 for a couple of days.
Eventually used the grease gun method, using an adaptor with grease nipple and pumped in grease.
Came out fine.

Powder coaters rang to say managed to fit in and ready to collect all the bits I dropped off Monday :o
Picked up and parts look lovely and shiny ;D
It does feel like cheating, but alot easier than doing myself 8)
Also got them to blast and etch prime tank, as quicker than paint shop doing.
Just need to decide on colour........ Im thinking a non standard bright red or silver, any suggestions, as original maroon is not grabbing me?
Could be going for a record here ;) but havnt started on the prep on fixings before zinc plating and havnt started on the engine :-[

9 months that's nothing its taken me 2 years to think about striping my gold bike to weld the frame.
I may get around to doing it soon as I'm now on my Christmas break as of of Saturday ???:)

I find my motivation is greatest on a new project and am keen to progress, but if I hit an obstacle can go back to one of the others ;D
I do love getting bits back from powder coaters and zinc platers!

Bitsa, If you scratch powder coating you can easy repair with a blowtorch, a little tricky. I always get my frames done in satin black as i find the gloss too much.

For a way out of date has been, feeling is dont like that idea.That said I do not restore bikes to show condition or better than Honda did so I guess its down to what people want.

You guys are making me feel guilty about the time I spend on the bike projects :-[
I didnt mention the CG125 I bought as a non runner and ended up rebuilding the engine, then had to do all the other bits that I didnt like, had to powder coat the rusty swinging arm, centre stand, headlight brackets and its sitting on my bike lift, stopping me frrom getting on with reassembling K8 frame >:( Trouble is all the nice shiny bits make the rest look bad and its not worth spending the money on :'(
I still managed to get some work done on K8, stripping front wheel, prepping fittings for plating, removed rear hub carrier bearing.

Rear hub carrier retainer came out easily after drilling staking, bearing was no problem after warming hub.
Will fit the 2rs bearings with 2 rubbers seals, just ordered full set of SKF wheel bearings 1x 6305 2rs 2x 6304 2rs 2x6302 2rs £21.85 on Ebay.
Tyres arrived yesterday, went for Avon AM26 Roadrider V rated 100/90/19 front and 120/90/17 rear

What is it with Cg Honda's I to have one taking up valuable space.
Do those need replating I don't thing theirs one bolt on mine that good :-[

Thought I had better get wheels in motion to get UK registration, so wrote to Honda on 10/12 asking to confirm year of manufacture and included £30 fee.
Received a very quick response today with confirmation letter, a bit surprised they were so quick.
Just need to finish bike and get insurance and MOT before next step :D

Only 3 exhausts that came with bike, 2 look OK and third is rotted.
The 2 good ones are marked IR and IL.
I see from parts list that different part numbers are listed for exhausts from 2818258, which mine is.
Anyone know what the difference is and compatability with earlier 405 pipes?

I believe it is part of passivation process, as can choose clear (silver colour) coloured (yellow) or black.
Have also had parts nickel plated, cheaper than chroming, but not same bright shine, but does suit some applications, especially older bikes where it was used before chrome became common.

I thought they might need to be reamed once pressed in (used 12mm studding with large washers to draw in), but fit with sleeve seems good.

How lovely to learn the proper way to fit these bushes. I also got mine from twowheelfrank a couple of weeks ago, but I hit mine home with a piece of 4 x 2 timber and a hammer. I also soaked mine overnight as suggested by Hairygit I think, and they fit a treat.

Because phosphour bronze is porous, it soaks up some of the oil, meaning they are thoroughly lubricated, and with the grease as well, they dont wear quickly.

Haha, I thought it was just me that resorted to unorthodox tools for the removal or fitting of parts. If I told you the implements I have had to use to get some of the bigger nuts and bolts undone on my 400, it would make a mechanic weep. Never mind, I get there in the end.

Pistons arrived today pn 13105-392-000 and rings 13051-300-024
Although they are the flatter top ones.
Pistons are marked 1.00 so whilst maximum normal range, wont have worries that wont be big enough :-[
Seems a bit of a shame going straight to max oversize as my bores are not that bad.
Also found some interesting info on oversizes on CSMNL site

Big thank you to BigAl who sent through wiring loom multi connectors (on approval) that actually match the original :)
Be aware that alot of the connector suppliers dont have the correct ones.
The original wiring was bad, the loom off Ebay a bit better, connectors seem to crumble in the US.
May end up going for Alan's harness rebuild, just depends on state of internal wiring when I cut and strip back.

You can check the ring size easily on the ring as it will have the oversize close to the ends, o/s pistons should also be marked

I have found that unless you do this, the remnants of blasting medium and powder coat can cause threads to jam.
Fitting the centre stand is much easier before the swinging arm is fitted, as you can fit the spring tilt the stand up and slide the pin in as most of the tension is off the spring. Check the pin fits in stand and brackets first and may need a gentle tap with sofy mallet. Certainly beats the other methods of fitting spring.

Someone has tried to force a nut with wrong thread on top shock absorber mount and damaged thread.
Honda use alot of fine M10 bolts with pitch of 1.25 instead of standard 1.5
Would have preferred to find and fix before frame was painted.
I dont have a M10 fine die and it may have been difficult to get aligned, so use a thread restorer file, didnt have a metric one but 20 tpi seems close and was able to clean up threads and fit correct nut.

The brake torque arm fixing on brake plate was a pain to remove as head of bolt turned due to wear and recessed so you cant get a spanner on it.
Bought a new bolt and hoped it would be held by back plate.
Had to centre punch plate in the end to hold in place.

It was not perfect, but by angling the spray managed to cover sides and background to letters OK.
At least I could do most of it in the warm and also warmed up badges before painting.
I will take a pic after masking removed.

Just stripped and cleaned shock absorbers and have added a few points I have learnt.
When taking apart it is best to take pressure off top fixing.
Ideally you would use spring clamps/compressors, but if you dont have, with great caution you can use cable ties.
First set adjuster to maximum pretension.
Use two or more cable ties to hold colis together.

Set adjuster to minimum and the spring should be held compresed enough to remove top fixing. ( or collets)
Treat the tensioned spring with extreme caution as there is quite a lot of built up energy which will release if cable ties fail, so leave on its side without contact with anything else. (If it was upright and tie/s failed it would take off)
It is a good idea to use penetrating fluid to soak the threads, push out the top rubber bush to access from top.

On CB750 there is a 17mm across flats nut that locks shaft to top and needs to be loosened using a spanner between spring coils and unscrew until reaches end of thread.
You can then hold shaft with nut and use a bar to unscrew top.
On mine one came off OK but I had to warm top part with hot air gun to expand and release.

You can now easily check the damping resistance and clean up the body before reassembly, reset adjuster to max and remove ties.

DSS dont have DID rear rims listed, almost bought a Morad alloy from another supplier, but decided against another £100 plus and the rear rim is not so visible, but the wheel is bloody heavy with the rear drum.

Dont you just hate it when you spend ages on a part to then find its the wrong one :-[
The rear mudguard looked to be in reasonable condition, with some rust on inside.
Spent ages cleaning this off with wire brushes, emery and scouring pads, then painting inside, to find the rear mounts dont line up :'(

Thanks, I use http://mercuryelectroplating.com/ (http://mercuryelectroplating.com/) have to electric wire brush first, usually around £30 plus vat for shoe box size batch, can do clear (silver) colour (yellow) and black

One job I dislike is cleaning out petrol tanks :'(
On the K8 the inside was gummed up and looked like molasses!
Tried adding fresh fuel and soaking for a few weeks but no luck.
In meantime I had tank blasted and etch primed as this saves lots of time rubbing down rusty areas and co I use moans about it and I hope reduces their/my costs.
You do not want to be cleaning inside once painted as very easy to damage with spillage.

As petrol didnt work I used cellulose paint thinners, with some nuts to shake about.

That worked quite well but you need to do in well ventilated area (outside) and wear protective gloves etc.
The first drain out was really dark and I probably drained and refilled (approx 2-3 litres) about 10 times, in the freezing cold :o
I used a stainless funnel and kitchen towel as filter paper to make sure I wasnt putting grit back in and also allows you to see how much is coming out. Also best to leave sediment in the bottom of container when reusing.

After the annoyance of finding the wrong rear mudguard came with bike, looked at ones available.
A fairly rough one was £70, so thought about options.
The correct part looks like it is modified with a short extension piece.
It got me thinking, maybe I could make an adaptor 8)

They do fit but need care to avoid cracking and you need to use original screws.
My tip for fitting light cover screws without breaking, is just use fingers on screwdriver and no wrist action :P

Decided on colour
Its going to be the red pearl 3 stage finish as used on Clio.

Ordered up a made to measure stainless braided black covered front brake hose £20.
On the K8 there is no splitter/brake switch union and switch is fitted to master cylinder.
Old one measured at 800mm with 30 degree bent on banjo end.

Reassembly of crank cases stalled as I found the drive sprocket shaft seal in kit I had did not fit later larger shaft on K8, so had to order one up from DSS.
It may be possible to fit seal after crank cases together but decided to wait

On my last install, I left fitting of starter motor, oil filter, oil pump, sump, alternator/ rotor and cover, clutch and selector parts until engine in and will probably do same again.
My rationale is it makes engine quite a bit lighter and easier to handle and as I have a bike lift it is not difficult to fit these after.

On my last install, I left fitting of starter motor, oil filter, oil pump, sump, alternator/ rotor and cover, clutch and selector parts until engine in and will probably do same again.
My rationale is it makes engine quite a bit lighter and easier to handle and as I have a bike lift it is not difficult to fit these after.
quite agree the less on it the easier it gets, you do some really good work martin and really show us up for being so slow keep it up fella its great to see your progress

I hope my updates help inspire/motivate others, but it is difficult to keep motivated in the cold weather.
The K8 tank is finished but as it is over 100 miles away I wont be able to collect until week after next :'(

DSS is £35 for exhaust valve and £27.20 for inlet, CSMNL is E54 and E49 !
Found 1 exhaust on Ebay UK for £15 inc and 1 exhaust and 2 inlet from Ebay France for £45.
Current spend including purchase is £3500 and still need to sort seat and 1 exhaust!!

For some reason the M4 kit is 3x the cost of M5 one ???

Best deal on valves I found were Kibblewhite valves from CycleX in the states. Good valves and still cheap even after postage and the dreaded import duty.

Very deep pitting, Im guessing caused by resting water over a long period of storage?
The head on K8 has F type exhaust fitting, but is not marked like a F1 with 392 cast mark, but has K8 hand stamped.

I may try grinding back to see how deep they are, could be welded and reground and sealing faces definately need attention.
Considered exhaust paste, probably would work on the sealing face.

Due to get my original F1 crankcase that had broken top right engine mounting back from welders, which will need fettling as well.

Picked up the cylinders after rebore and asked the opinion of guy who is a very experienced engine restorer on exhaust port pitting and after viewing was not concerned, so I just cleaned up with die cutter.
Ended up fitting 2 ex and 2 in valves due to wear at stem top

I went to +1mm, because I managed to find original Honda pistons and rings and thought it was overkill, but a shadow of the bore corrosion remains.
The specialist didnt feel it would be a problem so have fitted as they are.

Last CB750 I did found cylinders dropped suddenly whilst assembling so took precaution of using some plastic paper binder cut down to limit travel.

I used standard piston ring clamps which are a fiddle to remove after piston engaged, so have ordered the Honda part from DSS as I have 2 more engines to do ::)

What piston to bore clearance did he do on REBORE?
He said Honda clearance very tight, but as he has been doing the Honda engines since the 70's and worked with Dixons racing, left it to him.

Martin - did you sort a set of pipes in the end? I came a cross as set of 4 HM405 Original Sankei pipes lurking in the back of my garage last night (don't ask). I bought them to cut-down / modify the silencers for mock-megaphone 4-4 setup but looking at them it would be sacrilege to cut them up.
If interested I'll try and get some pics taken. They owe me a bit mind..

Well I had Norman the Norton, Tommy the Triumph and Harry the Honda and as I already had a Katy the Caterham, thought I would call the K8 that f....ing thing I spend all my time and money on :P

Not paint, but as the cases were not vapor blasted, some staining remains that did not come off with solvents.

It doesnt look as if dismantled before, but dot on rotors on opposite sides for first rotor then on same side for second by drive gear?

I bought a K7 brake master cylinder and new genuine stop switch, but no provision for fitting :-[
Decided to go with replica DSS unit and banjo bolt switch from China, with made up wiring loom.

I know, but its a lot lighter and just means I fit the alternator, clutch and covers once its in.

I would add, that I would not do this way without a bike lift that means you can work at bench height when fitting the remainder of parts.

Made quite a bit of progress, but seem to have problem importing images from my camera.
Engine fitted up apart from carbs, as just realised the K7/8 had differentent rubber mounts which are on back order :(
Managed to clear blockage on accelerator jets.
Clutch assembly slightly caught me out as the rear ally plate with the spring pillars had not engaged in outer splines.
So if you find spring bolts seem too short to engage with pillars, may be the problem.
I stripped oil pump and found rotor lobe damage so swapped with a good used one (thanks Bryanj)
Put in engine oil, initial 3 ltrs of running in oil, which should help the rings bed in.
Tried spinning up engine with plugs out, but no drop in oil level and oil light still on.
Dont like starting without pressure present, but having prlmed pump, may have to, athough may try pressuring oil tank via beather pipe, which worked on last bike.

Decided to try the method used before to fully prime oil system, I used a car tubeless tyre valve with end cut off and fitted into end of tube same size as breather tube on oil tank clamped with Jubilee clip.
After pressurising with air line and a few spins of engine the oil light went out.
Removed pressure and oil light goes out each time engine spun ;D
Plugs in and just waiting on DSS supplying the carb mounting rubbers.
As I am missing one standard exhaust, started to fit a new Motad I bought. but numbering of pipes seems wrong ie 1 is not left front?

I am afraid I binned the MOTAD instructions so can't confirm but I THINK the numbering was more about where the tube fits into the collector.

I considered replacing the original green heat shrink , but would have meant cutting off ring terminal.

The double sided velcro holding loom is just temporary until all the cable runs finalised :D

Found the Motad instructions, but the flared tube spacer (head rings) used instead of collets is too long to use the aluminium collars/clamps supplied.
Motad recommend fitting No 1 and 4 pipes to head then installing the silencer and finally 2 and 3 to silencer/head.
Looking from front to rear the tubes are numbered.

I bought the Motad as being suitable for F1 and as the K8 has same type exhaust fitting thought might fit, but with change to silencer mount and centre stand stop.
Any close up images of Motad fitted to K7/8 appreciated.

Just checked with DSS and advise same cables on K8 as European bars, but only genuine quoted at around £60 plus not stocked :o
Any recommended supplier for longer cables for high bars on PD carbs?

Bike did not come with carbs so had to buy some.
They were in pretty good condition, but cleaned out and debating whether to remove the press fit idle jets on PD carb.
Glad I did as came out easier than expected, using parallel pliers. Quite a build up of crud and would have meant carbs would not run right, pics to follow.
Cruisin Image float bowl seals expanded after testing the accelerator jets/float valves, but hopefully will shrink after leaving for a day or two.
Hopefully carb mounting rubbers will arrive this week and can try firing up ;D

Spoke to Motad about exhaust and they have sent me 4 shorter head rings/collars and an F1 silencer mount as I had a K6 supplied.
In the end decided to fit the Marshals system I bought from Pete and looks and fits much nicer, with more access to oil filter.
Will use Motad on one of F1's.

Bike has PD carbs which I have not worked on before and were missing from bike!
Had a problem with choke as not fully closing butterflies and no fast idle.
Found the problem was with jamming linkage as this swivels, so after carefully bending it now works with fast idle of 3k

My oil gallery cap was damaged and originals are quite expensive, so tried this ally sump plug (Subaru aftermarket) which has a built in magnet to catch stray metal particals.
Used a dowty washer to seal.

Throttle cables not ideal but dont catch lock to lock.

Careful they don't pull tight on one lock and cause the revs to rise as that is a failure as well

I am using a temporary seat and have a replica one on order at DSS, but may see if old one can be repaired.
Have left side panel badges and tank decal for the moment and am still on look out for an original No1 (left upper) exhaust, but quite like the Marshal.
Its insured on VIN and MOT Friday, hopefully OK then run the gauntlet of DVLA registration ::)
On to the next one ;D

I know what you mean, as I stopped rebuilding bikes when I had back problems and thought that was the end of it, but now I dont work so much or do the 40k miles pa, plus bought a bike lift and Im raring to go ;D

MOT went fine although had a anxious moment on the way.
Got about 2 miles and engine spluttered to a halt, I thought shit!
I had put in a gallon of petrol and was already on reserve, so tipped bike over to left to try to get more fuel to tap side,
This did the trick and was able to get to petrol station ;D

New V5 came through today, not bad, just under 2 weeks, with a Bank Holiday in between!
Have updated insurance to new T reg, just waiting for number plate to come through.

Its Zinc, as I believe Cadnium was stopped due to environmental/H&S issues.
