Title: Greetings from Dorset
Post by: Rush Dog on April 05, 2023, 10:38:32 PM
Hello all,

Firstly, thank you to Nurse Julie for alerting me to the UK site after I posted a question on the US site; without the intervention I probably wouldn't have found you!

I've always been a fan of 1970/80s Hondas and always wanted a 400/4 or a CB750; they were the bikes that caught my imagination when I was a teenager in the mid to late 70s; I was just into my 50s when I finally took the plunge with a 1978 CB400F2 in Parakeet yellow.

I SORNd the bike a few years ago after suffering persistant electrical issues, that on closer inspection revealed a whole world of woe, due to too many previously bodged fixes. Too often I was left the side of the road with no electrics, calling my wife to rescue me. I had little choice other than to take the bike off the road for a complete rebuild, with a view to ensuring the bike was good for many more years to come.

The engine was stripped and re-built by George Arnold Motorcycles in Poole and he also sorted out the wheels for me and modified the bike into a single-seat cafe racer stylee, before he handed the bike back to me so I could get to work on the electrics. M-Unit Blue now installed and a whole bunch of Kellerman, Rebelmoto and Daytona electronic parts too, and I'm in the process of wiring and looming it all together, as best I can.

If I can get the 400/4 back on the road I might turn my attention to saving a CB750...but that's just between us, I haven't told Mrs RushDog yet.

Previous bikes include a CBX550F, with the funky pipes and inboard disc brakes and few Superdreams and CXs along the way.

Welcome to the UK Forum quite a lot of 400 owners here including myself.

Below is my 400 that was essentially a lock down project purchased as a none runner in June 2020 pretty much completed in late July 2022  this was done thanks to Nurse Julies 400 engine rebuild as my main reference point.

Not painted in  original frame or tank colour, not original dampers, not original headlamp but old mounting frame still in place, Motad Exhaust otherwise pretty originalish. Replaced most JIS screws with alternatives in SS. Serious overspend as it was my first ever rebuild project.

On completion I found out - as I suspected -  I'm too tall in the wrong places for it to be comfy.
Presently rebuilding a 500 that fits me better - until the 500 is a runner again I still have my 400 to use.

Welcome Rushdog. Whereabouts in Dorset are you? I'm south Somerset and have a couple of 400/4's if you need moral support!

Welcome to the forum and for having a CB400/4 in the fastest colour (little known fact but Mr Honda would take a number of random 400/4 engines from the production line and hand them to HRC for blueprinting. They would put these special engines only in the yellow bikes and that us why they are the fastest. Of course I'm telling the absolute truth here   ::) ::) ::) :o ).
Being a Dorset resident you must be a regular at Sammy Miller's, I need to get down there this year to see the new exhibition hall.
