I used stainless pop rivets for mine.  Aluminum rivets will set up galvanic corrosion with the steel frame, so best to go with the SS variety.

Looks pretty rad, Hunter.  Those are some pretty good results to get with just a dremel too, I don't think my shaky hands could come close.  Is that a blue spoke I spy as well?  Almost looks like it's been heated to get a blue-oxide look.

A little while back I did a paint test on an aluminum plate brushed by various means.  The idea was to see how aggressive a brush I could use without having scratch marks show through after application of a matt silver engine paint.  The results were thus: 

  • Hand-held wirebrush, as new:  Scratch marks visible.
  • Drill-mounted steel wirebrush, heavy gauge, as new:  Scratch marks visible, with some deeper gouges.
  • Bench grinder-mounted steel wirebrush, light gauge, with bristles bent back from previous use.  Some scratch marks visible where I pressed harder, otherwise paint appears uniform.
  • Abrasive-impregnated nylon brush (see http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p90287: No scratch marks visible.

I found that the abrasive-impregnated nylon brush took care of oxidization on my valve covers, though it sometimes took a bit of time in the heavier areas.

Good call, Oddjob.  BryanJ stopped by recently and recommended the same thing, as well as for the main earth cable.  I didn't think too much about the steering lock to be honest, I never really use it.  Nick was nice enough to mask it anyway, and the important bits appear to have been spared the sand.  I've just riveted the VIN plate back on with some stainless rivets, what other stickers should I be looking for?  I seem to recall there being a helmet holder sticker, but can't think of any others off the top of my head.

(I mentioned plastic bushings in the center stand a couple posts back, I once again was being dumb, and actually meant the bushings in the swingarm.)

Good to know, Lester.  Better wait until I find the right size.  Might just get the DSS version, though the idea of superbike bars grows more tempting every day.

I'm with Lester on this one, Number's 5 and 6 appear to be the seals for the fuel delivery pipes.  Numbers 3 and 4 aren't ringing any bells, but perhaps they're part of the throttle slide assembly.

Assuming it's the black tube you're looking at, wouldn't that be the fuel delivery hose?  If you have an extra hose lying about, it might go to one of the drain pipes that comes out the bottom of the float bowl.  Having hoses on those drains is nice, as without it, any overflow fuel --perhaps from a stuck-open float needle-- would end up pooling on top of the engine.

I like the current position for around-town cruising, but anything above 50mph and I find myself leaning down such that my elbows are below my hands.  All cables will be run externally, so no need to find anything with holes in it.

Does anyone happen to know the width of the stock UK 550/500 handlebar?  I'm tempted by this offer http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Handlebar-As-Fitted-to-Honda-CB-500-/400666200505?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item5d499109b9

...but I just can't believe that the stock 500 width was 640mm (25.2").

Well hello there intrepid reader.  I'm pondering a stock or superbike handlebar for my 550K3.  But first, out of curiosity, I'm wondering if there's a name for handlebar I currently have, seen in the picture below.  It doesn't appear to be the stock version, but I guess it's not quite an apehanger either. 


At any rate, I'd like to swap it for something a bit lower and flatter.  It's just the final nudge I need to pony up for new stainless brake lines anyway, and I always felt like the inside grip was in my lap anytime I had to take a slow corner. 

Any chance you guys have a superbike bar you're looking to part with?  Or perhaps even just a stock 400/500/550 bar?
