CB500/550 / Re: CB550K3 Rear brake plate
« on: February 25, 2016, 07:33:45 PM »
I probably wouldn't be able to get a pic until Sunday, but I've had another look at the ones on ebay and this one 121901448948 looks the same as mine but they say it came off an f.
I was of the opinion that all of the ones with that webbing fitted. I have only tried two though so I'm not that confident.

The k3 one has a totally different external appearance to most others, or at least I believed that before reading this. When I bought one based solely on appearance it fitted, maybe that was just luck?

There are 4 on ebay that look correct, item number 222016753193 is one of them.

I don't know this specific model but on all the ones I've seen the plate stops it being removed.

Apparently some sensors can be knacked by magnetisng them with feeler gauges. I looked it up when I wondered why I had one brass feeler in a set.

I'd go lighter on the fork oil, I found 30 over damped and dropped to 20. Although I've seen a website that showed how much it differed by brand so there is a bit of pot luck in it.

Lucas, the prince of darkness, I needed a couple of those jars when I owned Scimitars :-)

Good old 3 position switches - smoke, smolder and burn.

CB500/550 / Was over charging now under. 16.7v to 12.2v
« on: February 08, 2016, 11:48:41 AM »
EDIT first post relates to over charging, later posts relate to under charging after fitting combined reg/rec.

I'm waiting for a combined reg/rec to arrive. I've read that they're easily fried, so I'm wondering if there's any tests I should do before fitting it?

The current status is 16.7v across the battery at 3,500rpm, the rectifier has a terminal snapped off and the potting compound gouged out to remake the connection, the red/white wire had at some point been replaced bypassing all plugs and its insulation is burnt. I figured it was a good time to fit a modern combined unit. The burnt wire has been cut out and replaced. The battery a recent motobatt still seems OK, but I doubt it'll last as long as a one not subjected to this. All other connections on the panel and in the headlight look fine, no sign of overheating. The bike wont be used until fixed, I don't fancy letting the smoke out of the wires.

Thanks

Allan

Hi alistair, welcome aboard fella, what model are you thinking of buying
pete
Thanks Pete,
Looking at a CB500/CB550.
Missed out on one I was looking at.Oh well.

What are you looking for? Something mint, something to tinker with,  something to restore, or a use as is run about?

Might be worth posting a wanted ad.

Having just cleared enough space to tinker I'm enjoying my 550 again, but I may part with it or my monkeybike shortly,  I fancy a 2 stroke race rep or supermoto.

Quite mild here as well. I don't really care how cold it is it just needs to be dry, been out 5 times so far this year. But my 550 is a pig to start in the cold weather, thank god for gel batteries!

When really cold. ...Ignition off, full choke, full throttle, 3 to 5 kicks, ignition on, close throttle, prod starter.

Sounds like the bench sync could be the issue, you can do them open or closed, but doing them open can result in them ending up fully closed.

To check all passages are clear and gain an understanding of what leads to where just spray carb cleaner in each hole and see where it comes out.

I don't know these bikes well enough to spot those kind of details, so I can't judge originality. It just stood out to me as being very close to immaculate.
By the way I've got no connection other than being a customer since I was a kid. They never would part with the cz100.

Spotted this when getting my monkey bike mot'd and thought it might be of interest.

Edit: Title corrected. I must type David Silvers so often that predictive text changed Sykes to Silvers.

I think I have some excel black leftover from a paintjob. If you need a sample I could send it to you.

I'd feel a bit guilty taking it to be honest, as buying this tank means I now won't be sending you one for painting as I'd planned.
