CB500/550 / Frame number help
« on: October 17, 2017, 07:29:11 PM »
Hi

I have now got my CB550K3 MOT tested and I am trying to register it. The problem I have is the VIN says CB550K-xxxxxx, which is now on the MOT certificate,  the letter I have from Honda USA has a VIN of CB550-xxxxxxx so DVLA refuse to give me a registration.
I just spoke to Honda US to get a new first registration letter with the correct vin, they say the letter correct and the US systems show what is on the letter so won't issue a new one. They say CB550K is a vin from a different country but they don't know where.
Can anyone help, I can't find an email address for Honda UK or Japan.

I really don't know what to do now, any suggestions would be gratefully received. Anyone else bought a US import from DK motorcycles and had the same problem?

Many thanks
Dave

Hi
I have just got my 550 running and had the same sort of noises, I took the bike to a local mechanic, he balanced the carbs and adjusted the tappets, it got rid of about 95% of the noise.

Even though the carb slides looked about even, when the mechanic put the vacuum gauges on they were wildly out, I was amazed at the difference with the carbs balanced.

The slow running screw on the bottom of each carb should be put fully in, then backed off 1 1/2 turns.

CB500/550 / Re: CB550k3 petrol tank not fitting snuggly

Hi

Just measured the gap on my tank and it is 11.6 cm, I was thinking of a couple of spacers on the mounting rubber stubs, or making the mounting flanges on the tank a little wider by pop riveting on some new strips onto the flanges.
Having never tried it, but wouldn't putting straps around the tank to pull back into shape just dent the tank even more?

Thanks for doing that for me, it will give a reference when I take the tank off and measure my tank

Hi

I have just put the petrol tank back on the bike ready for an MOT, however, at the front where the tank sits on the two rubber mounts the tank seems to able to move around a lot, as if the tank has been widened or pulled open underneath. There appears to be nothing visually wrong with the tank. I have ordered new mounting rubbers.
If anyone has a tank off a bike could they give me the measurement from tank side to tank side inside of the metal collars which locate on the mounting rubbers.
I don't remember there being such a gap on my original 550. I just don't want it to fail the MOT for this as during the winter I intend to respray the tank.
Many thanks

Bryan
Thanks for the reply, if you don't have the correct one I would be interested in one which may do the job.
I live in Tewkesbury so not to far to come and have a look.

Hi Bryan

It is a cb550k3, it is an import which currently doesn't have a headlight switch and I want to modify it.
Thanks Dave

I always wondered what happened to it.

Hi
Sorry I should have been a bit more specific,  I did mean having the headlamp come on all the time when turning the ignition on whilst its been in my garage doinga rebuild.
The o
Cb550k3 I had in the 70's had the headlamp switch, most useful.

Just as an aside has anyone ever come across a cb550k3 reg number TDG200R, it was the one I used to own, I would like to try and get the number back if it still not around.

Hi
Does anyone have a CB550 headlight/kill switch for ?
My bike is a US import which doesn't have a headlight switch and I find the headlamp on all the time infuriating.
I only seem to be able to buy a plastic replacement.

Many thanks

Hi
I bought my 550k3 as a US import, I am now at the point where I want to get it mot tested, then I had a thought. Do I need to change the headlight, will the original US headlight throw the dipped beam to the right hand side of the road, or does it just shine straight ahead?
I did try turning the lights on against my garage door, its hard to tell but the beam pattern does seem to be straight ahead.

Also does anyone now the name/shade of black for 550k3, as I plan to get my tank resprayed?

Many thanks
Dave
