CB350/400 / Engine Strip - I'm nervous
« on: January 03, 2020, 02:46:52 PM »
Hi All,

so i'm finally getting on with the Honda CB400 1977. I've asked many questions on here so far with plenty more to come.

I'll try and bring you all up to speed.

(1) ]Bike has been stripped down an now lives in boxes.

(2) I've started to refurbish the clocks but awaiting to make a decision on the clock faces, that is either to get vinyl over layor leave them as is. I'll probably go with 'leave as is'

(3) The frame is due to go to the powder coaters next week along with the yokes and some other bits as recommend in a previous post.

(4) I'm stripping the engine at the moment (Yet to split the crankcases). This is where I'm going to struggle. I've noticed the following things
(4a) Some of the fins on the oil filter are damaged.
(4b) The sump pan has been welded around the sump plug.
(4c) The oil pick up filter has metal pieces in it. It was also covered in thick gunge almost like gearbox oil.
(4d) The pistons and head are covered in thick carbon.
(4e) Removing the barrel some of the piston rings fell out (they were in two pieces).
(4f) The cam tensioner adjuster has been broken.
(4g) The barrels look ok but I need to measure them yet.
(4h) The pistons look ok but I need to measure them.

So my current  plan once I've split the crankcases are: Check crank bearing shells (plastic gauge them), measure barrel and pistons firstly for wear and to understand if the engine has standard pistons. Then get all the cases cleaned and checked. Then my plan is to get the barrels honed / rebored if required with new pistons ect, new bearings etc and then start to rebuild the engine. I want the engine in  the frame as I think this will be the easiest way to build the bike back up.

Please feel free to comment and give me guidance.

Is there anyone nearby to Plymouth that maybe able to help me / guide me?

CB350/400 / Nuts and Bolts
« on: December 03, 2019, 11:28:23 AM »
Another newbie question from me.

As I prep myself to get my project going, what you do for nuts, bolts and washers? Reuse the old ones (mine are pretty tatty), is there a specialist supplier or do you use a local firm to purchase them. Also, does the Honda have a finer pitch then standard? Stainless steel or is that a crime?

Any guidance will be gratefully receieved

CB350/400 / Powder Coating Devon / Cornwal
« on: November 19, 2019, 07:20:12 AM »
Hi,

any recommendations for powder coating in Devon / Cornwall? I have the frame, swing arm, head stock, stand etc ready for powder coating.

Also, the mounted items like foot pegs etc, are they just painted satin black which I can prep and paint or should I get these powder coated?

Thanks in advance

« on: May 14, 2019, 11:43:54 AM »
Hi,

i've stripped my seat pan off the 400. It had some extra padding at the back that didn't look original. Can anyone tell me if this is the original seat pan?

CB350/400 / CB400 Bolt Pitch
« on: March 13, 2019, 03:34:52 PM »
Hi,

Q1. might be a stupid question but are all the bolts around the frame and fixtures all a standard metric pitch? I was thinking of buying a bagful or two before the build so I have the various sizes to hand.

Q2. Zinc plated or stainless

thanks in advanced

Hi

I took the sump off today so I could final remove the engine from the frame. I found these little buggers in the oil pick u filter. Does this mean a full engine rebuild?

CB350/400 / Frame ID Plate
« on: March 11, 2018, 08:57:30 AM »
Hi

another question. The frame ID plate, what does everyone do with it when restoring the frame. Remove it before working on the frame or protect it? It looks like a couple of rivets hold it on.

CB350/400 / Steering Head Removal and Forks
« on: March 10, 2018, 12:03:49 PM »
Hi
took the forks off today. They are corroded at the top but pretty good behind the fork rubbers. See picture.

I cant get the head stock off at all, i dont want to use any brute force yet (got the pus gas out on the head stock). Why dont they just fall out or do you think they are corroded in. they move freely enough though.
