is there a way of testing a oil pressure sensor...
just been for a ride out and at lower revs say up to 2000 the light gradually glows on ...give a gentle rev and it dims off...
everything is nice and wet up top...
i have an order with ds so may add a sensor to it tomorrow..any other thoughts

Exact same symptoms as on my CB400/4 last summer Jason. Mine was the sensor playing up, fitted a new one and all OK.

Sounds like a oil pressure switch or the pump O'rings have gone brittle. Funny enough I have just started selling the O'ring repair kit for the 500's ;)

My gout is playing up, I blame a McDog burger on Monday. That's another guilty pleasure off the list.
At the risk of sounding like Eyore, you should get an oil pressure gauge on it, the switch may be working as intended. My local garage has one with a variety of adapters, yours may have one too. Then we can compare the reading with what Honda says it should be.
Somewhere on here is a nearly identical thread from my denial phase when I was trying to blame my CB750 oil light coming on at low revs on anything other than actual low oil pressure. That ended in an engine rebuild to fix the borked main bearings, eventually.

I'd be a bit suspicious with it too, the top end oil supply is effectively not measured for pressure as far as I can see so oil there is just confirmation of that. The pressure light is responding to pressure in the main bearing galleries and pump system so you can have some leak down within that and still see oil through the tappet covers.
Worth asking if the oil is new? Any dilution with petrol makes it loose pressure.

well ive added a sensor to my order so should have it in a couple of days...i wont stress untill ive fitted that...
i shall report back then start to brick it

For what its worth the OP sensor is a standard part that Honda uses on all sorts of stuff.
Get the part number and do a google like I did you will fid them LOADS cheaper than DS.

It's something you'd always hope, that it's the pressure switch giving you a false report. Makes your heart sink when you get it come on though.
As you say though, fingers crossed for a good outcome with a new one.

guess who may be selling new O ring kits !!!
the most difficult is the 3 counter sunk on the oil pump,and yes,that O ring did leak !!!

So far I have only ever had that light come on due to a dodgy sensor switch. I've had a couple do that, on one the switch actually started spraying oil out of the top too. At least it made diagnosis easy. You can hear on the cb550 when the oil supply to the head is poor, rattles like a can of old bolts being shaken up. Inexperienced owners might not spot it, if the bike arrived sounding that rough like my k3 oil slick did, but once your used to a decent sohc motor running nicely with a civilised exhaust it's fairly clear from the engine note that all is not well pretty soon. Trouble is I like my un civilised exhausts.....

ok heres the story...
the oil light never came on even when ignition was on...
wiring ok and would come on when i hot wired it...
put a spare (old one from an engine i have kicking about under the bench)in
riding to mot 5 ish miles...last half mile light was glimmering on...under 2000 rpm above dimmed off...
should have the new one here in a day or so i will pop ot in and see...
the bike is really quiet probably the quietest i have had no rattles or knocks and very happy under load

well switch fitted ...20mins running and all good but i wont really know untill i get out for a ride...tipping down here so probably/hopefully the weekend....fingers crossed

Hopefully if the oil lights not on now when at low revs / idling, the new switch has resolved the problem Jason. Fingers X'd.
