Title: Switch cable routing
Post by: sye on March 08, 2019, 11:50:52 AM
Does anyone know for sure if the UK 500K1 had the switch wiring inside or outside the handlebars please. Looked at loads of pictures and some have them in and some out  ::)

What I'm attempting to show is the separate Hi Low switch cable is on the outside of the bars, everything else goes inside the bars

Thanks Julie but I'm still confused. When I got the bike the handlebars had no cable holes and they were attached to the outside of the bars. It was cheaper to replace them with a new one from a 550 as the 500 wasn't available anymore. These came with the holes.

Just to confuse matters further it seems that the switches are available with the extended hole for running the cables outside and without to wire through the bars. Both versions are available under the same part number and may vary according to country or versions. I'm just guessing there but it doesn't make it any easier to work out.  :-[

Julie, the extra switch for the headlamp on/off, all the ones i have seen before had it mounted inboard of the main handlebar switch as it was an afterthought for the uk at the time, so which is correct?

Absolutely no idea Mick. The pics are from a bike that Trig built, soooo my logical answer would be, he left the wiring from that seperate switch outside the bars for a reason. He will enlighten us later I hope.
Edit....Mick, I see what you mean now, you are referring to the actual switch position not the wiring route. Trig will answer that I'm sure.

All UK 500 had wiring inside the bars, except the extra on/off switch, until the owner fell off and didnt want to pay Honda parts prices so bought cheap generic ones. I would never drill those for them as i thought it weakened the centre too much.(Originals have reinforcement)

So that's a definite answer, inside the bars it is, thanks Bryan.

Jut the question of which side the on/off switch goes now? just given it all a severe looking at in preparation for tomorrows go at putting everything together. The switches I have are fitted with a peg that fits through a small locating hole in the bars. If that's in the hole, then fitting the on/off switch outside the indicator/horn switch is impossible. It may well be that this hole was in a different position on the 500 bars as the ones I have are 550 ones but look the same?

That's not a Hi/Low switch. The HL stands for headlight. It is intended to switch power to the RHS switch which then control P (pilot), L (low beam), H (High/main beam). It is generally fitted the other side of the switch on the LHS.
I had a K1 in 1974 and confirm that all wiring except the wiring for the switch above (which was introduced for European markets) is within the bars.
