Was this item originally separate from the sprocket? I've looked out for one for more than a year and suddenly they turn up at DSS as part of a sprocket but at a sky high price. Are they worth having for more reason than classic looks?

No ... never separate part.... always supplied as part of the sprocket assembly rivetted to it. I think the ring was finished in a really dark olive drab type passivated zinc finish. Definitely worth having IMHO .. as 'Hairygit' on here always says ... Honda fitted parts for a reason.

Always happy to take advice from Hairygit... but Honda stops fitting parts for a reason, too. You rarely see a sprocket-mounted guard on any bike these days. Is it meant to be a safety feature?

It's called a derailment plate. It stops the chain from jumping off the sprocket if the teeth or chain are worn. If it does jump off the sprocket, you jump off the bike usually. :o

Hi Athame57 I think I’ve got one of the plates that was removed from a knackered sprocket. It’s in my mates garage but unfortunately I can’t get at it at the moment as he’s on holiday. Will hit you back if I’m right, if so you pay the post and you can have it.

I seem to remember that replacement sprockets did not have the guard and you were supposed to unrivet it and transfer it
