Hi. Just bought Cb550f. Confused because it's on a W plate, registered in August '81. VIN and engine No point to a' 78 bike??? Any idea, clues???

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Maybe old stock or european import registered in 81?

I'm guessing an Import. The CB550/4 F2's were a good seller so can't imagine one sitting around for that many years (not impossible but unlikely) If it were a CB550/4 K3, I could understand it being a sticker.
Is the date of UK registration different than the date of manufacturer on the log book?(http://)

Welcome to the forum, great advice on here to keep your bike running.
Maybe its a US import? Do as Nurse Julie says and check the manufacturer date against the log book as a good starting point.
If you post some photos there will be plenty of advise on here of where it may have come from.
Tip, I think you need to have 5 posts before you can add photos (stops the spamming community trying to sell us life insurance!).

Easy way to tell model is type of carb, tops very in shape from coffin with screws on side to "P" with screw top and bottom.
