Title: 400/4 Battery Location question ?
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on November 06, 2020, 08:03:53 PM
The battery connections on my bike were as follows when I bought her- the positive cable is nearest the fuel tank, the earth cable is nearest the rear wheel. The battery that came with the bike has the positive terminal as in the photo.

The live terminal is very close to the air cleaner frame/box where it could easily short out - I have inserted a small rubber pad for safety to tery to push the terminal away.

is there something missing to prevent this or is it not the right battery or cable layout?

Your battery, in effect, is round the wrong way Ted. The battery terminals should be nearest the frame. I will take a pic of mine in a while.
Edit... Your cables are also around the wrong way and the battery looks much too tall.

Probably the wrong battery came with the bike it was dry charged when I bought it still in the box. I suspect you are right it is too tall as if fitted with the terminals next to the frame they would hit the tube.

I need to know the correct battery type number as original - DS site photo shows type CB12A-A on the casing. I might get lucky and find its just all back to front - certainly my cable runs look weird. My battery is marked as a MF CB12A-A  p/n712121 its 161 Tall.

I can move the Negative cable easily but the Positive  one is quite short not sure where it runs across the frame from the solenoid assuming it is the right lead fitted?

I'm pretty sure the main wiring harness routing is wrong in places as it's clearly very tight in some places with excess in others.

Here is my battery set up. There was no battery with the bike. I bought it from Tayna batteries.

I've reversed my battery so it fits correctly. The earth strap looks as though it fits on the engine mount nut OK. The positive now reaches the starter solenoid was upside down after some loosening of terminals it's now as it should be. When I come to replace the wiring loom I have no faith in the existing routing so will be on the look out for photos of how it should be routed. Workshop manuals are a very limited sources of such information. Some serious searching is ahead of me - old posts here etc. I guess there isn't a market for rebuild manuals. I take my hat off for those that build a bike from a boxes of parts.

Thanks everyone for the input.

That is much safer battery now fitted the right way around.

This may help.

Thanks Deano that's really helpful for when I rebuild after full strip down. What is the source of the page as neither of the manuals that came with my bike have similar pages ?

As I suspected my loom has not been replaced but definitely it has been taken off and refitted with quite a few errors.
