Hi. Guys,
Gone and done it now, from one restoration project now on to two, just bought cb750 kO. needs a lot of work but got a lot of the parts with it, but would like to know what type and what is the correct colour of paint for the BLUE. really have my work cut out for me , will no doubt be on again, Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob from Ash,
Candytone paint is a silver base then candy colour coat followed by clear and is very difficult to apply correctly so really a job for a professional painter. Bike parts are different than car parts and I would choose someone who specialises in bikes.
My Candy Ruby Red K0 set of parts was painted by Andrew Parnaby who also paints for CB750 Guru John Wyatt and David Silver and a reknowned Sandcast guru in the UK. He chose a Honda current candy colour for my K0, which was an exact match for the unfaded paint on the headlamp bracket under the reflector. He has also painted your candy Blue Colour before (and also the notoriously difficult K2 Gold) but I think the blue paint is much more expensive, as he has to get it from RS BikePaints. He also paints on the tank stripes, as this is how Honda did it on the K0. Every job is different so it would not be fair to tell you what I paid but it was comparable (probably slightly cheaper) than Dream Machine. This guy is a real enthusiast and is the nicest guy you could wish to meet. My tank had a massive dint in the corner which Andrew removed perfectly and he repaired the louvered side panels . PM me if you are interested and I can put you in touch. I can also put you in touch with a guy who had his K0 painted in the Candy Blue/Green by Dream Machine (I believe they use stickers for the stripes).
Let me warn you though that whoever you use it is not going to be cheap. Bringing my painted set of parts home in the back of the car from painting was like bringing my first born child back from the maternity hospital !! One false move and your precious delicate cargo is in danger!!
Is your Bike a genuine UK one or an import?
I saw one on Ebay last week which was blue with loads of new parts.

Thanks for all the info Ash, was going to get it done professionally and wondered if any of you guys new anyone up here (near Stirling Scotland) and yes its the one from ebay last week, hope I got a good buy.

Sorry Andrew is in Tadcaster North Yorks. I am sure I saw an article in a recent mag with paint done in Scotland though. maybe someone else remembers it.
Funnily enough the Ebay guy reported prices like i paid - 1500 for the bike anda round 2500 for the parts. Expect to pay between 550 and 650 GBP for painting the tank, panels, ears, headlamp and airbox. unless anyone knows anywhere cheaper and reputable.

Ash is right about the colour - Eamon's K0 is Candy Blue/Green Honda Code AZ. That might help a professional painter, although Hondas 70's paint codes were notoriously "in-house" (ie means nothing to anyone else!)

if you can get a good colour match like the inside of the air box i would try and use that as a guide I would say the candy blue green is the hardest colour to match to many coats it goes too green not enough and its too blue I did read somewhere that it takes two and a half coats lol thats how hard they are to match up,i have done two blue bikes one was too blue the other too green, :'( and one candy ruby red,the one with the red paint being the easiest too match i am thinking of doing a full set of candy gold in the future that should be interesting , they all use the same silver base coat Honda paints are notoriously difficult too match and they used too mix the lacquer with the paint thats why so many colours got bleached out over time like the red bikes from sunny USA 8),i have not tried two pack as yet because cellolose paint is now banned you will have a job too find a sprayer that will use it ,unless you can find a really good sprayer i would say John Wyatt is your best bet i have a spare set of blue parts done by JTS too far for you they are in Devon ,but thats what you need a dedicated bike sprayer who can do candy colours as Steve said the colour code AZ is of no use unless you are buying all the original parts from Honda lol i wish , good luck with the new bike i saw it on ebay they are picking up some serious money,I'm tempted too unload some of my k0's lol :-\

Glad you guys no what you are doing, how do I find a dedicated bike sprayer ???, anyone out there know one up here :-\ wont need them for a while yet, but good to know if there are any. 8)

Go to your nearest bike dealer (doesn't matter which flavour) and ask the service guy who they use for their minor repairs. They normally have a good handle on who is good locally. Next ask them if they'll paint classic stuff and colour match from a sample.
I found my local bike painter via my Triumph dealer.

John Wyatt does not paint BTW it is his next door neighbour Andrew Parnaby at Marston Moor Ind est (who doid mine) who does his painting.
Evidently Andrew ended painting the Candy Gold in the resto project in Classic Mechanics a few years ago, as the guy originally asked to do it could not get it right

Will gladly post pics when I get the hang of it so far have only been able to email direct to Ash, so any tips on how to do it would be appreciated, you can tell I'm not up to speed on tech stuff.

NICE one Steve -I didn't know how to upload photos either!! the 750 is 'as found' last year 1500 quid (note the k2 seat and 341 style exhaust/shocks - I sold these on Ebay as there were not correct). The 400/4 was restored in 1986!!

I like the front guard with the holes for the number plate! I wish I'd kept mine but remember gleefully removing and binning it when the government decided that they were dangerous and could be removed.

Unfortunately it is reshaped at the front and rotted around the bridge so I had to get a new 'rolled front' one

Could you not repair it?
A friend did this on a KH250.
Had the chrome stripped off, repaired the mudguard (rewelded the rust holes and polished out the repair) and refitted the bridge. Rechromed.
Cost a bit, but it is all looking great now.

Hi. Ash, no never emailed anymore photos since one of the cover with the fins waiting to get a few good ones to send, busy trying to get other bike finished to make room for this one, will post pics of that to, once I have mastered the art, you will probably be sick seeing them :P

Thought of repairing cut guard but its way down my list and probably beyond saving . Last year the non cut version cost me 79GBP from DSS now it is 175GBP. He had to go through 12 brand new boxed ones to get a decent one for me!! see http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=51892.0
The 'double cut one' is around 600-700GBP from Japan!! I have thought of cutting sections from two non K0 fenders and welding under the braces: see http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=51407.0
BTW Bob - I had every single part of my K0 that is black, powder coated by a guy in Castleford for 130GBp inc blasting and prep. Finish was spot on - My painter Andrew put me on to him. Turnaround was only a week.

Hi Bob
This Sandcast on Ebay UK describes how he had to get the tank painted twice to get the correct Candy blu/green. May be worth sending a message to ask him if he knows which paint they finally used, no of coats etc. Just a thought.

Hi. Ash, Thanks for the link had already looked at the bike nice machine, see reserve not met, Have been making some enquiries and think I will send it to Dream Machine as no way could I do it myself, have you heard good things about them? will be glad of any more tips and info. any of you experts out there have.

Bob - I am in contact with two guys with immaculate K0 and Sandcasts in the UK. One guy has a red and blue Sandcast and used Andrew Parnaby for paint (he put me onto him). The other guy in Cumbria has a blue K0 and he used Dream Machine. I can give them your details if you like to ask them of their experiences. I know that Andrew paints on the stripes (as they were done by Honda I am led to believe) and Dream Machine use stickers.
Steve - where did Eamon get his paintwork done for the Blue K0?

The tank is original and the sidepanels were bought NOS by the last owner.
