Title: Wiring loom - which way?
Post by: rustywheels on September 25, 2021, 11:12:04 AM
I've decided to replace the remnants of my old wiring loom, with a nice new shiny version.

But... which way to start?  Do I tackle the birds nest of the headlight first, or get some quick wins by starting at the rear and leave the top end to last?  Any recommendations/preferences?

[ex electronics engineer speaking]

Fit the loom to the frame first.

Then, rather than starting with a physical location, take the wiring diagram and work through it systematically.

Start at the front of you like. Headlight, indicators, switchgear etc.

When I was faced with this task and realized the colours are not all the same as the original I rolled over and paid to let someone else do it!  ;D

Hi,
As Steve says, hang it on the frame first - I use temporary cable ties to start with and if you turn the ties 'inside out' they will hold it but can be released if you need to slide it back and forth.  I actually start around the leccy side of the airbox, as this is where they are a 'stingy' with wire lengths. After that you can progress in either direction as the mood takes you.

There is a lot of information on loom routes both on this site & elsewhere I found this useful for basic loom routing.
I hope the pdf file attaches here ok.

Thanks for all the info and advice. Managed to swop it out pretty painlessly.

Good news is that the colours in the DS loom are pretty accurate for the model I have, which was a relief. Took loads of pictures as I took the old loom off which helped.

Don't always take the old routing as correct unless you've had the bike from new. Any PO could have removed it at some time and put it back on wrong, same with cables, use the routing diagrams available on the site.

That's a real problem Oddjob - my wiring routing was so bad it was unbelivable. As well as the pdf documents there are some great pics from members here that I have saved as I have found them so I have a big folder not just of schematics but also memebers photos. You can never have too much reliable information is my motto.

I hope to be fitting my loom in place by the middle of next month so I will have something to keep me busy on dark winter nights.
