The left side wiring loom from the switch that operates the Indicators, horn & headlamp beam has been messed with - it has the wrong sized male connectors so I am changing them to match my new loom. I suspect that the only female connector might be fitted incorrecly but am not sure.
The loom wires are the following colours,
Dark Blue (male)
Black/yellow trace (male)
Orange (male)
Grey (male)
White (male)
Light Blue (male
Light Green (female)
Can anyone please confirm if the one female connector on the light green wire is correct - the colour is somewhat faded.?

By what i can remember Ted, the light green is a female (it's the horn wire). I'll see if I can find a pic somewhere on my PC

If the wire carries power it has a female connector on so that it gets a plastic sheath which prevents accidental grounding, if it's a return from the equipment it has a male. IIRC the light green wire connects to a black wire in the switch when the horn is pressed and black is power so the wire will be live so it will have a female connector. That will of course connect to a male from the horn and they'll be another wire going to ground from the horn. (dark green) or may be black with a green ring on it.

I think the early switch grounds the hornto the bars, you can tell which you have by looking at the horn.
If the thorn has a loop wire to ground the switch provides power, if it has a live wire with ignition o the switch grounds.

Not sure if this helps Ted but here is an early photo showing the wires from the loom to the horn. Light green goes to one of the horn connectors and the other wire from the horn goes to a loop connector that sits on the front coil long bolt next to the frame. They are the wires I am holding.

Thanks for the input I guess the green female is correct I'll see how it pans out when I connect the battery next week.
Ameded update:- I seem to have more than one version of the wiring circuit.
1) The light green female connector is live when the horn putton on the handle bars is depressed so this feeds the horn that is itself earthed to the frame by a second connection.
") Another wiring diaagram shows the horn fed with a black wire from the ignition then a light blue wire from the horn via the loom so the handle bar button earths the circuit.
They can't both be right?

There are 2 versions of the left hand switch Ted, one only has a horn button, that one earths the horn, the other has a pass/horn switch, you press for horn and push right for headlight flasher, this is the correct switch for the UK, the horn only is a US market switch, commonly found on imports. If you have the pass/horn it's option 1, if horn only it's option 2.

I only have a horn button like you no headlamp flasher - my bike has not been imported from the US it was registered new in the UK.
If Ken is right (he usually is) then at some time the switch unit has been changed for a US one, strange as both switchgears on the left & the right have matching faded patina.

So you just have a Horn button like me no combined headlamp flasher ?
This might explain why the Horn was not on the bike when I bought it - also no mini wiring loom for the horn.

Mine is the same as Julie's with the headlamp flasher, they have matching faded patina at the edges and look original. My bike is UK registered in 79 and late F2.
It seems you are well into the wiring now, when is launch day Ted ? ;D ;D

Mine was registered March 1978 it seems to have had quite a few odd US parts fitted like the rear mudguard & now it seems some switch gear.
I'm thinking end of March early April depending on the weather. I'm not re-painting the Tank & side panels until the back end of 2022 assuming it starts & runs OK for the summer.

Are the DS replica handlebar switches any good?
Wondering if it's worth changing mine for the correct UK one.
Downside is it would not match the other side. Probably not worthwhile for the sake of a headlamp flasher.

I can confirm that my 400/4 was purchased by me UK registered, (2nd hand) in 1979 from its first buyer, and the left switch was a button to earth for the horn, no pass for headlight, I presume the switch was changed by Honda after 1976

According to my parts book there are two left hand switches.
1. 35200-377-003 With the Pass switch.
2. 35200-377-671 Without the Pass switch.
003 was sold on bikes in Europe.
671 was sold on bikes in America and Canada.
Having said that I guess the General Export models would have been sold anywhere and probably had the 671 switch in case they went to America or Canada. So in this country I guess you could have either switch.
