I'm seriously thinking of buying myself a bench polisher but am a tad overwhelmed by the many brands & specifications on the market. Is there a minimum power requirement I should look for is 370w enough?
Does this look about right?.

As is the way I gave my last bench grinder away many years ago to someone who would use it - it was a really heavy one I bought from a garage sale.
-
370w will stop when you press on the work. Minimum I'd say is 600w.
I use 2 x Sealey bench grinders, BG200 IIRC.

The rats tails extensions are easy to source. As are the mops and soap. I use this place https://bolgers.co.uk/

Thanks Ken tbh I thought the power was probably on the low side at 370w.
So is 150mm polishers okay or is 200 better?
-
Ted, believe it or not, my Clarke polisher (bench grinder) is 210W. I use either 150mm 3M wheels (scotch brite etc) and 150mm polishing wheels on it. Yes, it slows with lots of pressure but I tend to take it slowly. I use it for cleaning up nuts & bolts an polishing S/Steel fabricated parts. If I was polishing large items, I'd probably go up to 8inch and a more powerful unit.

I started (and still have and use) a 370w bench grinder. It was useful to learn the tricks etc but as soon as you're doing a lot of polishing or polishing steel for instance or even large alloy pieces it's limitations soon became apparent. I have it fitted with finishing mops now and use it to clean items of soap as I'm working with the more powerful Sealey.
I'd go 8" if I was you. The bigger the area of the mops the more access to the piece you can gain. The rats tail extensions make polishing FAR FAR easier and changing mops is now very easy.

Commonly called rats tails for the corkscrew effect on the end. You select the size dependent on the spindle size of the bench grinder.

Now now Ken don't be unkind to Rats.
Thanks for the links.
-
You told me they were called pig tails Ken........And Julie agreed! Have I missed summut? :D
-
Yeah you’re right Roo, mixing up my animals, pigs tails makes more sense
-
Not enough coffee first thing mate, easy mistake to make ;D ;D
-
Thanks for everyones input - Ive ordered a bench polisher from these guys.
The shafts could be longer but I think it will do the job rated at 750w.

And I can really recommend these for tarnish removal before polishing:

I have various grades and have used them for years (not the same one, however!!)

Probably being a little thick here .......
The one you have bought seems a great price for the size of motor etc but if I'm reading the specs the bar is 20mm dia ?
I see it comes with cotton pads but the scotchbrite type ones for surface prep etc seem to come with a much smaller hole .... so IF I'm on the right track ... by the time you have found some 20mm pigtails the price will be much higher ?
Or am I missing something ... which is more than possible

Just got my polisher out to do a few bits.
Here's what mine looks like.
(https://i.postimg.cc/sXt1TbBS/IMG-2808.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/34FKRSFJ)
On the left pigs tail is a felt mop which I use to do the first polish using grey soap, on the right is a close stitched mop which I use to do a polish for spotting areas not good enough, I use white soap on that one. I then resand the rough areas until I try with the grey soap again. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 polishes to get it to my satisfaction. I have around 6 different grades of soap and approx 10-12 mops of various sorts.
The covers on the pigs tails are to stop the work getting damaged when it slips and hits the tail, the little bits on the end are for the same reason, I'd advise doing something similar to yours as the nut/end of pigtail can really mark a piece of work if your not careful
Just done a camshaft end cap off a 500/550, was pretty badly knocked about with lots of small dents, which are bloody awful to try and polish out, I've sanded them as flat as I can, getting rid of all the dents/chips and then do a few polishes to see how they come out. Some alloy seems to polish really well and some doesn't and takes a lot of work to get a good result.
I'll post a pic of both caps done, the one already done has come out really nice, like a mirror.

A Before and after pic, one done, one not.

Do you use any kind of booth / screen/ area when polishing to stop splatter Ken?
-
No Ted, I like to do it outside as it does generate quite a lot of fibres, they fly off the mops, especially the felt ones. I do wear eye protection, sometimes a full face mask if it's a small piece, I wear a breathing mask as well, cannister type. Tend to wear gloves a lot as the pieces can get extremely hot, I've been known to wear soaking wet ones so they stand up to the heat better. I also like to do it against the garage door, so if the piece grabs and flies off it hits the door and doesn't get lost. Had a piece fly 30ft down the garden once.
One thing to warn you about, you will get INCREDIBLY dirty doing this, right now I look like a coal miner, seriously if anyone saw me they'd think I was a racist doing black face

I might see if they sell Scotchbrite wheels or as and when buy some end tails.
-
You can get 20mm pigtails. Just remember to get a L/H or R/H one! (or both!) ;)

Both now done.
Came out ok really.
