Just been comparing my usa cb550f on a 75 plate to my new uk 550f2 on a 78 plate that I got from mickf ( many thanks mick) & I have noticed that on the USA model the steering lock is operated by the ignition but the UK one has the old style one one the headstock . I was trying to search for a new lock for it but on the cmsl parts ficsh it does not show the frame as having it. Any thoughts on what would fit .regards Dave

I'm in the same predicament, my frame has no boss for a lock and I'm not running a standard ignition so I think I'd resigned myseelf to carrying a chain tbh, think there's no other way of fettling this scenario

If you can get someone to weld a small metal bracket just under the top headstock ball race fitting you can have the steering lock inside the ignition.

I woiuld Ken but my frame's gone for paint, sent it before I left including all the polishing and other bits that needed painting/coating. I think its a chain for me.

The lock that goes sideways into the headstock is ebay item 371480375424 BUT the stem on the bottom yoke needs a slot in it for it to work

You can get an ignition lock that incorporates a steering lock as well Bryan, it has a steel pin which comes out of the lower front of it, in fact if you look at a 550 lock you can see the opening which has been blanked off, you weld what is essentially a half moon shape piece of metal on the ball race part of the frame, the steering is turned fully to the left and turn the key fully to the left and the pin comes out and goes just at the end of the new metal bracket, this stops the steering from turning but it only works at full left lock for some reason. My CB1300 has the same system as do most of the more modern Hondas.

The UK K3 shows a lock. Is this the sort your F has?

UK and europe is in the steering stem , USA is on the ignition switch.
These look the same as the UK and was going to buy one but, don't have a bike to try it out

I went through the same with a CB400F2; mine was a Canadian model with nice ignition key steering lock, whereas the UK versions had you grovelling under the headlamp. My question is, why would Honda go to this considerable extra expense of frame variations and lock hardwares? (the 400F2 also had additional frame differences wrt pillion footrest mountings iaw international markets)

I guess a simple alternative could be a short cycle style cable, run round a fork leg and a down tube. Not too difficult to carry and might even fit in the tool tray.

In all my years of Motorcycling tbh I hardly ever used a steering lock then on my 250 Dream it was seized solid from lack of use when I tried to lock it!

I always use mine, just a habit I picked up.

My 500, No 36, was knicked and pushed away after breaking the Honda steering lock then torched cos they couldnt start it

The fact is though Bryan is that without the steering lock they could just push it away to work on starting it very easily and without any drama, breaking a steering lock is noisy and attracts attention and most times that's enough to put them off.
It's not foolproof but it is a deterrent. Every little helps, so they say.

Most likely will fit the Cb550, but you'd need to check dimensions. Good price for a genuine Honda lock with 2 keys IMO.

That clearly wont fit between the spokes or thread through the links on my chain for the front wheel Ken........ ;)
