Title: Registering bike with USA title document.
Post by: AshimotoK0 on March 03, 2023, 10:02:49 AM
Pretty familiar with registering via dating cert. route but anyone know what the procedure is if you have an original USA title document? I have three bikes with USA titles and need to get them registered.

DVLA still want a dating certificate. If you send the original title you won’t get it back.

When i did it they accepted the title as date proof but does it show the correct year?
Yes you dont get it back, in theory it is sent back to the country of issue telling them its no longer there.
Personaly Ash i would get dating letters and put the titles in the file for the bike

I got a Title document with my CBX import. The problem was that although the bike was built in 1981 the title showed first registration as 1983 and the VJMC dating service wanted to use this date which would have delayed the historic taxation class for a few years. So I 'misplaced' the Title and sent photos of the VIN Plate to VJMC for the dating certificate. Worked a treat so I agree with Bryanj's comment, dont use it.

That's why I ended up with a J plate. Kept the title and sent a dating cert based on manufacture date (7/71). Actually would have preferred a K for my 500K0. But I think you should be OK with the title, keep a copy.

Mine are both 3/71 and I would be peed off if I didnt get a J plate on both of them.

Mine’s a J.
The V5 says 1st April 1971. That’s either a joke or lazy (default to 1st of the month).

Two of the bikes are not that significant .. will just colour scan the titles and use them to register. The third is my 3/71 500K0 so will go to HOC for dating cert on that one. Find VJMC expensive as non member and very picky.

DVLA will not accept scans, photocopies of anything.

Not sure that’s entirely true. I used a colour scan of mine. Perhaps it went undetected by DVLA!

I’ve sent a few colour copies in my time and never had any issue but I suppose that depends on the integrity of the letter opener and the quality of the print??

Yes, my colour scans were sent innocently, I didn’t realise at the time they had to be ‘originals’.

They say they wont but have done in the past, probably becausethey didnt realise. Scanners and printers are a lot better than a few years back and even repo watermarks

When Nottm LVLO was still in operation they would not accept copies of insurance certificates for obvious reasons.

Over time probably as a result of Insurance Documents being sent as attachments over the internet by Insurance Companies for the owner to print off the rules seeme to be relaxed as long as its did not look like a straight photocopy around the edges etc.

Ash,
I just got my V5c this morning for the Shiny Orange 550.  Photo of Driving licence, photo of Nova details, NO TITLE, photo of Council tax bill (eventually - my fault!) original of embossed VJMC dating info, application and £55 cheque all sent recorded signed for (twice - due to my failure to verify my address the first time). Documents returned today - V5c, my photo of Nova, original VJMC dating letter.  Plus a separate letter with all the usual guff about plates etc.
They have also taxed it as Historic but I haven't insured it yet!! - so likely to get a plod letter before I do.  Normal DVLA cock up included too - they have it down as a CB500 not 550 but capacity is 544.  I'll send it back after I use it for a rear plate, just to give them more work.

Ian

Forgot to say DOM June 75, issued with N plate

Just SORN it Ian until its ready to use. You'll need to tax it again for £0 when you're ready but takes less than a minute online.

Good call Julie,
I didn't want to contact the insurance yet as they slap your legs for £30 for any changes.  The 1500 Wing is on it's way to pastures greener but the new 350 Forza has yet to arrive so I intended doing it all in one hit.  Also might be moving my BMW R100 RT on (the 2 wheeled grey Fergie!) Anyone want one??

Behave yourself Roo,
They're bloody awful! Never was much of a salesman!  I'll send some details via a pm and pics when I get your details - I haven't found a way of adding attachments to pms (no I mean messages!)

You can attach photos to a PM but only if you use Tapatalk. The forum s/w is too old fashioned to offer much more than just text.
