Title: Will a CB400F left switch fit a CB550F2
Post by: wizz on September 26, 2010, 12:46:25 PM
Hi i want to replace my faded indicator switch on my CB550 F2, have noticed the CB400/f one looks identical but the part numbers are different, does anyone know if i could use a 400/4 one as it looks like these are back in production
cheers

If the part number is different there will be a difference but dont know what, maybe one has wiring inside the bars and the other outside

seem to recall from trying to use a 400/4 loom on a cb550 that some of the wires might be different lengths. Check the functions carefully, dim and dip moved fron right to left bars on some models / years. They look really similar until you try fitting them ::)

just been comparing the circit diags & there seems to be some electrical differences - drat i was hoping i could buy and fit a 400 one - looks like you can get them new from DS - i expect it can be done if you knew what you were doing but i don't

If the metal parts are the same, can one not just swap the switch parts from one unit to the other?  If you make drawings and notes as you go it should be straightforward enough.  Just proceed slowly and carefully.

I have just looked at mine and it is very faded but I had not heretofore noticed.

P.S. Next time I am in Taunton we should meet and compare notes/bikes.

All three bikes use virtually exactly the same switchgear housing...& as has been said, the only differance may well be the wiring. On my early CB550F1 the wiring went though the bars via an elongated hole to the box by the front left of the fuel tank. But on my CB550K3 the wiring was external of the handle bars & went into the back of the enlarged headlight shell.

So if you did choose to buy a good condition unit that was meant for a CB400/4, it would fit...anything can be made to work. I fitted a left hand switchgear from a CB125TD Superdream onto my modified CB750F2, because I could use the indicator switch to actuate the headlight, & the headlight pass switch as the electric starter button. It kept all of the switching on the one handle bar/clip-on, freeing up the right side for the quick action throttle from a Honda XL250SA.
