Title: Cb750 f1 cafe build
Post by: andy_sheff on January 01, 2013, 03:51:48 PM
Well, thought I'd put a few pics on of the build upto where I am at the min! Started life as a standard bike which had been sat for 9 years unused in an old mans garage, or so the eBay seller told me 😄

It didn't come with the side covers so I had to get those, reproduction but very good quality, I also bought a frame loop as its a nightmare to make such things, 20 quid and I knew it would fit

Painted up the front disk while I was at it. The next step was to paint the wheels which turned out to be not very successful, I keyed them up ad etch primed them but it didn't stick well enough, shame as it looks good. Gonna take the wheels to the powder coasters instead

This is how she stands today, half painted frame, wheels swing arm etc going to powder coasters later in the week

The ones that were on before bad been on for ten years sat not moving, they were like concrete. Bit of an error really painting the wheels. The powder coater will have them done for me in the morning

I got them from an eBay shop, was about the cheapest around.
I've been having a nightmare with the tank, it had a liner in it which was peeling off in sheets so I've had a good go at it with the acetone etc its not perfect but I think it will be ok as the fuel cock has a filter on it anyway
Title: Re: Cb750 f1 cafe build
Post by: cb750stu on January 03, 2013, 08:49:26 PM
The tank was the very first thing I looked at when I bought the bike lucky for me its pretty much pristine inside
Will you need to line it again whats under the liner ??

Good luck !!!

Lucky you! I looked in this tank and it looked fine and sealed well but as soon as I put some petrol in it started to come off, been dry for 9 years. Hopefully I won't need to line it agaain, gonna just run it. It's not too bad now I've rinsed most out.

The bikes got one of those motad 4 into 1exhausts on there which I'm not a fan of, and it's quiet, if I slice the end off the can and remove all the baffles etc i think that might improve its sex appeal somewhat

Probably better off just buying another pipe, or use the motad down pipes and collector, then weld a decent pipe on to it

I'm tight tho Pete, I want It loud and I think the shape of it will be ok, ile wrap most of it anyway

I read somwhere on here a while back that someone punched a hole through the baffle plates with a long chisel which improved the performance a bit and made the pipe sound better, if you open up these pipes you will find all sorts of baffling plates and chambers which start right at the begining of the  pipe, good luck with it maybee you can show us some pictures once you have modified it

I did something similar to that on my old cd 250u, it did make it a bit louder, this is as much about cosmetics as it is noise , the pipe is about 5 inch diameter but the hole in the end is well small, would look better just open I think. Ile take some pics I might have a blast tomorrow.

Nice job Andy, did you fit the tyres or was it a garage?

They were powder coated as one piece, I had the same done on my last ones. I've no need to ever take the wheel apart. The local bike shop fitted the tyres for me, for a ten quid or whatever it cost it's not worth the hassle it's not simple. Here she stands with the wheels  on

Handlebar dilemma, these are standard ones which I was going to keep on but I'm not so sure. I like the low kinda bars but concerned about the riding position, drag bars perhaps?

Also got my new rear shocks today

Looking good Andy.

IMHO Cafe = rearsets + Clipons ( Or Ace bars min )

I hate to categorise like this as a bike should be a reflection of its owner ( thats why mine is boring, standard and overweight  :) ) so go for what YOU want but in categories the standard bars look more 'Street Fighter' than cafe to my eyes.

PS Standard bars will be more comfortable of course and delay the onset of 'Potato pickers back'

I cut down the mudguard, Also got my new bars on and bled up the brakes. I opted for drag bars. I had a bit of a job soldering up the switch wires which like a fool I cut really close to the controls.

Looking cool Andy, Like the silver, gives an almost monochrome look and goes well with the wheels / forks. Might the side panels look good silver too?

Saved some weight with the silencer!  :)

Great job andy, that pipe is looking good, will you try and baffle it a bit?  tank looks much better silver than brown keep up the good work, thanks for sharing the pictures

The silencer weighed a load, I was shocked! Very restrictive too, loads of tubes in there.
I like the side panels black, it will all tie in once the seat is on I think
I got the wheels done at a local place in Rotherham, dunno if your from round here?

Pete- I'm gonna see how I get on with the open pipe, if it makes my brain rattle i may have to baffle it!

Thanks guys

Nice Dax, the colour scheme really suits it.

I'm going to dig out my z50 copy again this year, I used to use it most days and do a few monkeybike runs but I haven't bothered with it for a couple of years, CB550 and VFR750 kind of took over.

How does it sound/run with the cut off silencer. I have the same model cb750 with the same motad on it. I'm curious as to whether my neighbours would hate me if I did the same; and also how much it affects the fuel/air mixture?

I'd like to know too!

Did you just cut off the silencer? Surely that affects the carb balancing, no?

And do you plan on leaving the airbox??
