Title: David Silver Rims
Post by: AshimotoK0 on January 04, 2014, 12:52:05 PM
David Silver sells DID rims and also some cheaper ones. Anyone know if the cheaper ones are any good? Which ones does he use on his restorations?

Cheers

I have heard some very bad things about the cheaper rims on the us forum, however you can find bad reviews on just about anything these days, i just wish i could point you in the direction of the post i read as it was an eye opener

Yep, the cheap ones are like the Chinese type and only last a couple of years. I resorted a 400/4 with a DID on the rear and a Chinese on the front. The seller gave me the invoice to prove he had had the front replaced. The DID was sill in good condition, but the front rim was rusted through.

If you want good rim's, go for CWC British chrome. They will set you back about 100 a rim, but are well worth the money.

I bought a non-oe front rim 10+ years ago from Silver. The finish isn't as good as Honda as you can see sort of brushstrokes through the chrome if you look close enough. Fine if you just look at the bike normally though and a hell of a lot cheaper than original.

I've just wiped the WD40 off for these pics. The closeups make them look bad when they aren't really.
Oh, mine is Japanese. I see no signs of rust.

The ones he is selling currently are made by Union Cycle. They are described by DSS as being

"A high quality replacement rim, offering an alternative to the original which is no longer available.
Why go to the effort of re-chroming your old rim, when you can now replace with new, much cheaper and with no compromise on quality!"

Shame if he is selling poor quality, I always thought they only stocked decent stuff or NOS Honda.

Referred DSS to this page on Facebook. If I get a reply I will post here.

Yep that was the one Ash, the guy took good pictures and described in detail all the flaws and problems, it seems that they are a total waste of time

Or avoid possible poor chrome and steel issues and get stainless rims and spokes.
They look the part although are not quite as bright or shiny .... But they don't rust either

I think he meant this one. It appears to be a themed set of beer pumps

Yes they are a good job. Silicone, flexible. Probably 25+ years old now. Bike doesn't misfire in torrential rain anymore. They are called Hotwires.

Back onto the Rims ;)

I got this reply from David Silver via Facebook.  he has tried to register but can't log in for some reason. Would be great to have him contribute here!!!!!!!!!

"David Silver Spares wrote: "Hi Ashley Derrick, cannot seem to log in, have registered and been accepted. Here is my Resonse : DID rims; definetely the Rolls Royce of wheel rims and suppliers to Honda as original equipment rims. Of course, these are the most expensive but we stock them for all SOHC's. Union Cycle rims; Made in Thailand, quality OK, have had some CB400F's where the holes needed reaming out slightly. OK for a wheel builder to build, tricky for individuals if this is found. Only available for smaller bikes up to CB400F, have used them many times on our own CB400F restorations. Sumitomo rims: The 'Lada' rim, fits, works but the joins are crude (agricultural) and the chrome is not the best. Chinese made but to be fair, a price to match and if you don't intend to fit it to a show bike but one that will get occasional use in Summer, this rim will be fine. Only available for CB500-750's. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for and by keeping 3 brands we are trying to suit all requirements and pockets."

So will DSS give us a SOHC discount? I'm not worried about his cheap wheels, i would like to see cheaper OE parts.

Must confess to always using DID rims from DS on Hondas, but also stainless spokes, usually from CWC. Always built up well and seem to have lasted well.

Yes I got DID rims for my 750K0 and was just wondering what to get for my 250K0. Looks like it will be DID again.
Philpots hard chromed my '79 KZ650B1 forks (long gone and plated by the PO before I bought it). They were absolutely brilliant, bike kept outside but stanchions never corroded.

David Silver said via facebook to me  that if we have any more queries then I should point him to the link to the relevant post and he will reply.  I don't personally  want to start asking him about prices, more a route to answering technical/supply queries. e.g. can he stock Yamiya stuff without us having massive shipping/import duty costs.

Off to bed now before Steve accuses me of being a creature of the night !! :D
