Title: Carburettor Felt Washers
Post by: Drew400 on September 16, 2014, 08:35:47 AM
Hi all,

What function does the felt washers in the carbs perform? How critical is their presence? As you may have surmised, mine were missing and (so far) have not been replaced.

Thank you,

D.

Probably to keep out dust and dirt that may otherwise be sucked in (due to the pressure difference from slight air leakage past the carb sleeve) and would wear the carb internals - not to mention the engine :D.

Hi Drew,

I rebuilt my carbs last year & was thwarted by those washers... had a few attempts at making 'em but alas just couldn't get the right material... and so was on a hiding-to-nothing. Their job in sealing the spindle is significant I guess..

Anyways, in my junk drawer oodles of neoprene / rubber etc 'O' rings, and after a bit of checking out suitability with fuel / grease etc these are what went in. So far no complaints, no air leaks, rock solid idle, no stiction to talk of.

Correct felt washers would be my first choice for sure... just saying (I think) you have an option.

Simon

Mine didn't have any in and still don't have any as I didn't know about them, to be honest I don't much fancy stripping them down to put them in but I did a bit of searching and on another forum the general consensus is a lot of people don't bother with them after a carb rebuild, I'm not sure what to do now. Do you know the size of them ? There are quite a lot of felt washers on ebay of varying sizes that may do the job, similar to these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-Felt-Washers-16-6mm-O-D-X-9mm-I-D-X-5mm-Thk-/131284212299?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1e91261a4b), also being a drummer I have quite a few felt cymbal washers lying around I could possibly modify.

Tim Boughen has a guide on how to make these washers in the file section of the Yahoo Cb400F Group. Unfortunately the file is too large to upload to this forum, so you might have to join the group first.

Cheers,

Justin

If you are interested. Instructions on how to make the felt rings are here:-

I had to use different sized cutters but otherwise worked well.-
