I have a standard exhaust, solid enough but looks a bit tatty.
I took it to my chromer and he told me he couldn't do the collection box and two pipes due to the shape and complexity, burbled on about anodes and he wouldn't be happy with the quality of the job.
anyone managed to get some pipes re-chromed without any problems? and where? hopefully Yorkshire area but will post if necessary.
-
You will find it hard to find a chromer that will do a silencer ( if that is what you are calling a collector box) as it dirty's the tank.
-
I had my header pipes and collector box rechromed by Broadway Brass in Birmingham. Fairly reasonably priced too. Have a look at the gallery in their website at chromefix.co.uk

looking good, how much did they charge for the collection box and headers?
-
The collector box with 2 fixed pipes, 2 loose pipes and 4 finned clamps was 185 including packaging and delivery from Birmingham to South Scotland. Pretty reasonable I thought.
-
I agree, its not too bad for the business part of the 400 and the pipes are becoming hard to find, still its £200 once I have posted them out.
Maybe as trigger says, silencers are a problem, maybe a new one from silvers, they look as standard :)
Will give them a call in the morning.
-
Sounds a really good price.
The place I used (S & T in Yate) are not cheap but have a good reputation.
Apparently just nickel and chrome for plating the headers, no copper.
-
Unless I'm mistaken, Broadway Brass also trade as Chromefix - a name I got from this forum - (or at least that's what it sounds like when they answer the phone). If so, their prices have increased as they currently have my headers and collector box for rechroming for £240. Cost me £16 to send it to them. I'll be affixing a replica silencer when they come back (takes about 4 weeks apparently).
By the way, they didn't need me to prep my pipes in any way.
I'll post a picture when they come back later this month.

A couple of years ago I messaged someone on ebay who was selling rechromed 400F headers/collector to ask him where he got them done. He replied here: http://www.marquerestore.co.uk/ (Coventry)

Thanks guys, got em sent to Chromfix today using the courier service they offer and yes, it looks like a silencer from silvers will be on order soon.
4 weeks £250 ouch
-
That isn't a bad price ..... Paid£90 for a single NOS header to be plated.
-
Look what Santa brought me...
As promised, photos of my exhaust as re-chromed by Chromefix (before and after shots). Looking forward to fitting them on the bike, one day.
£260 included return carriage. They were very well wrapped and arrived 2 days after I paid on Paypal. Good service from those guys.
I'm no expert on chrome (this is the first thing I've ever had re-chromed) but they look good to me.
Cheers and seasonal felicitations all,
D.

By the way experts, is there any kind of sealing tape or some such applied when pipes 1 and 3 (or is that 2 and 4?) are fitted back into the collector box before the clamps are tightened up around their joints?
Ta, D.

Honda (DSS at least) still do the metal/composite? tubular packing items that seal pipes 1 and 3 in the collector .
Part no. 18391-375-000.

Nice one Clem, thanks, D.

As promised, here they are in situ (a satisfying note upon which to end my weekend's garage work... albeit they will probably blow when (and if) I get this baby running again).

Just to add to Drew's choice of chromer, I have also used Chromefix on several of my full restorations, they will also re chrome two stroke exhausts.

Classics and Chrome in Hinckley, Leics (http://www.classicsandchrome.co.uk/) have been recommended by
AshimotoK0 elsewhere on these forums. I have a rack with them for plating at the moment - it helps that they
are local to me. They show a BSA Bantam exhaust in the gallery on their web site so can obviously cope with
exhaust systems. May be worth a look.

Drew
They look real nice mate

Thanks Bitsa and all,
I'm looking forward to one day warming them up (from the inside) and seeing if and and how much blow I get... that's leaking exhaust gasses not a celebratory substance!
