Title: carburettor
Post by: hondatri on December 27, 2014, 04:18:00 PM
I am hoping to strip and clean the Carbs on my 77 CB400/4F. I have a full kit of Jets and seals  and would like to know how I replace Needle. Do you count the needle rings from top or bottom

Really,i didnt see alot of difference between the 400 and 550 except that the 550s are a bit bigger

Not sure what stage you are at with the carb strip. To get the needle out, you remove the top and take the screw out of the slide.

The needle just sits in the slider resting on the groove clip with the lifter assembly holding it down.

If its a thin section "O" ring its a float bowl seal

If it's like the one the arrow is pointing to it's as Bryanj says, the float bowl seal.[attachimg=1]

After they are installed for a while they "mould" to the shape of the bowl so are a bot easier to re-fit.
I found that the petrol makes them grow slightly in length but an hour drying in a warm place shrinks them down to the right size !
Never needed to bond them in place either as they will stay in their groove as a rule !

ok stupid question guys. I have made up a height measure 21mm for float level. With the carbs upside down do I measure at the furthest point from the valve end, Or am I doing it wrong,

You are measuring from the face of the carb body to the top (that is bottom) of the float. Make sure the weight of the float is not depressing the sprung pin.

From the float bowl mating face to the highest part of the bottom of the float when the carb is inverted.

The 400/4 carb  float pivots at one end while the opposite end of the float is the highest point is this where I measure height.

Mine are pretty much parallel with the carb body/float bowl seating face as they should be. Not my picture but mine were pretty much like this, you need to bend the centre tang next to the pivot point to make them level.

Bend the tang arrowed to get them level when in the rested position and they should be around 21mm, if they are tilted as you describe the 21mm dimension is the point on the float furthest from the carb body/float bowl seating face.

Another thing you need to get right is to make sure all the slides move/start at exactly the same time when the throttle is turned, also get the dimension in the picture below as near as possible when you put the carbs back on the bike, it's the best starting point for synchronisation, you can't get a vernier in so I made a 56mm gauge out of a nail.
