Title: Which flyscreen
Post by: Ashdowner on June 20, 2015, 09:54:37 AM
I'd like to have a flyscreen to take the drag off my body on a long run. I read the reviews and the universal ones all seem to have some problem or other when adapting them to a particular bike. Can anyone recommend a screen that they've successfully fitted to their CB550K3 with it's 8" headlight housing? I'm looking for one of a similar size to a GIVI A210 which is about 350mm x 350mm.

I seem to recall that Honda used to advise NOT to fit any kind of handlebar mounted fairing or screen to the SOHC fours.:$

Had one on a previous K3 nearly 30 years ago and it was great so don't understand why Honda would say that.

I put one on my CB500 in 1974 - it looked great with a large alloy tank and straight handlebars.

I also put one on my CB550 this year.  The brackets were easy to make out of aluminium strip connected to the headlamp bolts and mirror fixings. These are for 7" headlamps though.

Possibly if they were badly fitted they could cause stability issues at speed, it was generally mentioned in the owners handbooks.

There's this one if you fancy the fairing type:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/gs-750-Classic-motorcycle-fairing/161722347902?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&_trksid=p2050601.c100103.m2451&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150422114059%26meid%3Dd4707a53a6ef43e2a4f399b13a4c4e09%26pid%3D100103%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D331578401661%26clkid%3D6902968335784614654&_qi=RTM1889348

I quite fancied something like this on my 400/4 but with the indicator mounts being part of the headlamp bracket I think
there would likely be a relocation issue with the indicators. Not impossible to solve but not work I want to do right now.

Petersy - where did you get yours from? It looks the part and is for a 7" headlamp.

No I'm looking for either a bugscreen or small touring type. I don't want to get involved in adaptations and alterations

How about a fly screen, like this...

I was going to suggest the Puig too:
http://www.bs-motoparts.com/en/wind-protection/fly-screen-puig-naked-light-smoke-i674-934-0.htm
I have just ordered one for my 400. Says it will fit headlights up to 20 cms diameter, available in various tints and colours.
They do other models too. Also quite a bit cheaper than Givi items.

it fits the Katana OK.  It just fixes on using the two M10 headlamp bolts

I can recommend the Dart flyscreens. I've had one on my Bonneville for about 4 years and it really makes a difference despite the size. They fit really easily just on the headlight retaining bolts.

I have now received and fitted the Puig screen. It seems to be designed to fit an 8" (20 cms) headlamp.
As noted earlier the description says it is suitable for headlights up to 20cms diameter, and it does come with various bolts and spacers to aid fitting.
The headlamp on the 400/4 is 7" but I couldn't use the spacers supplied as that would have meant using longer headlamp mounting bolts and on
the 400 they have the reflectors fitted on the end.
I ended up getting some spacers to fit between the screen mounts and screen, with longer bolts to suit, so the mounts could be fitted using the standard
headlamp mounting bolts. A bit more fiddling than I had hoped but all sorted in the end and looks fine.
With an 8" headlamp I think you should pretty much be able to bolt straight on.

Still wondering where Petersy got his headlamp fairing from with 7" headlamp hole.

Thanks Peter.
That's the type I was looking for but didn't find what I wanted, hence going for the Puig (I had a GIVI on a CB-1 I used to own and liked the look of that).
I'll keep this in mind in case I decide to change.

I'm looking for one of a similar size to a GIVI A210 which is about 350mm x 350mm.
I came across this slightly larger version of the Puig, which has a stated size of 420 x 405mm.

Seems a good price even when you add delivery, they also do the smaller version.

I got a Puig as suggested by Mike above but it came without the fixing brackets (grrrrr) and I didn't particularly think it suited the bike so I sent it back. Still searching

Hello everyone, very interesting subject.
Petersy could you kindly take a picture of the fairing on your bike, would love to see it, also, does it work for you, i'm 6" and not sure if it would for me, and do you have standard handlebars?

Thanks

Thanks for the photos. Sounds painful I know but it looks a bit taller than I'd hoped. How tall is it from the  headlamp cutout to the top of the screen?

Hi
James did Ashdowner have that screen from you. If not and if it is still available I would be interested purchasing from you.

Bought a second hand one off ebay. No idea what make and I had to adjust the brackets (judicious use of hammer) to make it fit. It's only about 170mm from the top of the headlamp cutout to the top of the screen but despite being so small it it really makes a difference and diverts the air away from the stomach and chest.
