Title: Tyres
Post by: toucheturtle on June 22, 2015, 07:47:13 PM
My CB500 was fitted with Avon Roadrunners rear-120/90-18 and front 100/90-19. I changed the rear for a Roadrider 120/90-18 without checking what the recommended fit was. It's now time to replace the front. The handling has always been fine so am wondering whether to go for the Roadrider 100/90-19. The recommend is 3.25x19" which is avaliable as an AM26 but not sure how much difference there is between the two tyres. It seems the AM26s are slightly smaller than the older AM20s, can anyone confirm this?

I use the Avons,

  3.25 x 19 front

  4.00 x 18 rear

  run them at 27 front,and 32 rear,

they always feel great for me,last time I used Dunlops, but they didn't give me the same confidence,

don't fit over wide tyres,,3.25/90 front is wide enough, and 4,00/100 rear is bigger than standard, but work well

How much difference is there between a 100/90-19 and a 3.25x19"?

A 90/90 would be closer (3.25 = 82.6mm)

I think that a vintage bike with modern looking tyres doesn't look right, so I like to stay with the classic tyres of the era but which use modern day rubber compounds, so I use the Avon Speedmaster MKll 3.00 x 19 on the front and Avon Safety Mileage 4.00 x 18 on the rear.

Got mine here.....

I guess it's a matter of personal preference.
Back in the day (mid to late 70's) the first thing many buyers did was to ditch the standard fit Japanese rubber and fit a pair of TT100's or Avon Roadrunners.
As tyres like the Roadrider are pretty much the modern equivalent of these then personally I'm happy to use them and happy with the look.

I've got Pirelli MT65's on mine and I wonder if the tread pattern is the reason that I've got a pretty impressive front wheel shimmy

I ran mt65 pirellis on a few of my bikes. I prefer Avon tyres overall but am happy to run any cheap part worns. I am pleased as punch with a maxis tyre on my ntv at the moment for handing. I was on Bridgestones before. Not as well mannered. The cb500 I pretty well always run the Avon sm mk11 rears. Avon fronts too. Which pattern dependant on sidecar fittment
