Can anyone give me some advice on an easy way to remove the bank of carbs on a 550 fi , as I know it's very tight between air box & carbs , so is it best to remove air filter etc ( battery etc) so as not to damage the rubbers between air box & carbs.

yes,
and try to warm the rubbers with a hot air gun,try to make softer

When I do it I always leave the all the rubbers attached to engine and airbox, but take filter etc out and undo airbox mounts and the box will move back slightly, but just enough, still bloody fiddly though. 20 mins to get off usually and about 90 mins to get em back on!

If you can afford it, new rubbers (carb to engine and airbox to carb) make the job a lot easier...

Cheers guys , having tried in the past with a bit of patience,( that's what's lacking) just thought it was me doing it the hard way , hey Roy I don't own such as a hair dryer as there is no need at the moment , if & when I happen to invest in a Rooooooney perhaps I may have to purchase one eh ,ha ha,

Oh by the way Roy , don't want to make the Rubbers too soft 😰 ?, as the they could break then I would have some explaining to do 😘
