Title: Am i Being pikky!!!!
Post by: RGP750 on December 04, 2015, 10:17:14 AM
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1973-HONDA-CB750-K2-SOHC-EXCELLENT-FULL-RESTORATION-BY-THE-UKs-BEST-CB750-SHOP-/181950235670?hash=item2a5d144416:g:7FQAAOSwnH1WYFth

"restored by the best cb750 restores" it says
Why are the crankcase bolts/ gaskets painted over then?? Looks like it has been painted in one lump to me.
Bent head fin
and probably more.
For that money I would want better.

Rother Classics is not a company - and has been active on facebook since March 2015.

Looks like an offshoot of Rother Valley Motors (?)

yes i see what you mean rich, the engine has been sprayed in one lump bolts gaskets the lot, yes it is a tidy looking bike but not worthy of the ( EXCELLENT FULL RESTORATION BY THE UKs BEST CB750 SHOP)  title, i will be spraying my f1 cafe racer engine complete rather than take it apart, but i wont label it the best cb 750 resto lol

No PayPal is not uncommon, on much lower value sales than this, to avoid getting clobbered by their fees.
Selling on behalf of a customer is also not uncommon, and the seller themselves have good eBay feedback which is not a bad start.
Certainly some things that don't stack up though, like the apparently non-existent restorer.
Not necessarily enough to dismiss the bike out of hand though.

Not a fan of allen screws where there should be JIS (Firrips) crosshead screws, having replaced them all on mine, I see what you mean about the painted gaskets too. The sweatband over the master cylinder, though a common mod to catch leaks, looks modern, it covers up whether it is real or one of the modern replica master cylinders with grooves.

Not bad though, but personally I want modern Avon tyres, not yer period Avon SM 'Square Mileage' which were horrible even in the day (been there, fallen off in the wet, so I know what I'm talking about).

I don't think you're being over picky.  For that kind of money, not to mention the boasting,  I would expect a bike that was beyond criticism.

Ultra picky point here - the seams on the fork gaiters should be aligned fore / aft, with the drain holes at the rear - I know this because I realigned mine last weekend after reading a post about it, having first fitted them any old way round.

Where is the 'usual oil leak ' from BTW? Unless its the tacho drive one, which I've fixed, I can't find mine.

We should give the guy a break I guess, that Candy Gold looks good (Yamiya body kit?), and is my favourite colour, but if you are going to claim it as 'the best in the country', there are people here who might beg to differ....

If you make ambitious claims about best in the country and asking top whack, expect picky, Once the price approaches 5 digits expect very picky. I personally really like Avon sm's, ran them for years on my cb500 and bmws and prefer that combo to any of the Pirelli or bridgestone wide rubber on my modern Hondas come winter, basically a decade on avon sms every winter - no issues, 4 years on modern rubber and fat rear tyres and 2 offs, a broken foot and numerous close calls, mind you I am not one for going fast and am stupid enough to do ice and snow riding a bike...

I did take the modern horrible looking tyres off of my K2 and put on Avon SM
and not had any twitchy moments but then i don't ride silly hard.

Man you lot are a load of anoraky, picky, obsessive buggers . b*llocks to originality, that's what I say. I just love that modern day patina of sprayed over gaskets. Can't for the life of me understand why Honda didn't do that back in the day or use silver coloured gaskets. Those Mickey Mouse metal JIS screws .. Blah .. overpriced cobblers give me some nice cheapo allen screws that you can give so much welly that they shear of the ally threads.. bloomin' marvelous.

Nobody picked up on that immaculate period rack on the back Got to  add grand to it's value in anyone's book.

You are just picking on us poor old Yorkshireman again . My advice ...Get  down theer reet sharpish lad and bag theesen a bargain . Well I think that's how they talk in Sheffield LOL  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Them were funny tasting mushrooms you put in the casserole tonight dear ... makin me feel all woozy and queer. Which slow cooker did you use ????

Had a real close look at the engine. That baby has not been apart except for the side castings, rocker box, and sump.

Its just a quick lash up to make lots of dosh.

And what usual Honda oil leak is he referring to, must mean one of his rebuilds.

I would stay well away from this at the price. That said, the cycle parts don't look to be done too badly.

I love Avon SM tyres and you can push them very hard indeed if you know what you are doing.  I think they do become a problem if they get old and hardened but in regular use they are great and wear very evenly.  My tyre man, who is also a motorcyclist, recommended them and I've had three in a row in the last couple of years and been very impressed.

With regard to the eleven and a half thousand pound motorcycle, all I can say is you might get better value buying something else, it looks shoddy and overpriced.

I didn't mean to start a tyre debate on the side, FWIW I always found SM's a bit too 'square' at the back, OK bolt upright but not confidence inspiring when cranked over. I had a couple of bikes with Avon GP's though, which I did like, a nice rounded profile like the modern Avons I have today. That said, my first CB750 had worn TT100's which had gone a bit more square that triangular at the back and felt awful when you leaned over. I've had a few tyres like that in my time, you learn to put up with it until you can afford a new one.

I have a proper Dunlop Racing 'triangular' in my garage from when I was classic racing, I must take a photo to show you the alarming profile, none of your namby pamby 'just leaning it a little' with those - the options were 'bolt upright' or 'grinding the exhaust pipes'.  :o

Anyway here's another £10k CB750 to pick at, notice it says '1970' and not 'K0' - it has K0 panels and badges, but K1 caliper and airbox - my bet is that it has a K1 VIN number too. And 2 grab rails. Lovely colour, but then I would say that.

I don't know what others think about crash bars, as well as less ground clearance, I remember my mate crashing a Triumph T140V (I had one myself that I jumped off a few times, the footrest always took the hit rather than the engine) fitted with crashbars - while they saved the bodywork and engine, they bent the frame and wrote it off!

I told my brother this one years ago,
What do you call a girl who can balance a pint on her head?    Beatrix

He didn't get it......until weeks later in the middle of a lecture at Uni, he burst out laughing and was asked to leave the hall
