CB500/550 / A frustrating weekend!
« on: April 17, 2011, 06:58:31 PM »
OK, spent the entire weekend working on the cb550. I dont normally spend so much time on her but I have let the rot set in a bit the last year or so, and havnt invested any money at all for a lot longer. Its starting to show.
She has a couple of bad oil leaks from the oil pump and gear change oil seal. Not normally a problem but it is covering the chain and hence my back wheel in oil. (better than a scottoiler though!).
I have a new rear tyre on order so decided to tackle at least one leak. So had a go at the oil pump, by far the easier to fix. Ok no problem so far. Cleaned air filters, plugs, checked cam chain, valve clearances and timing. Changed oil. Started on the front brake system, It squeeled really bad.
Thats where it all went wrong.
Ive poured about 2 litres of brake fluid through my master cylinder and all I get is sponge! Its a relatively new piston so ive cleaned that and reused it. Fluid seal was replaced. Normally, when I get this much pudding in a front brake I suspect the piston seizing. But its good and moves freely. I can only suspect the master cylinder has decided to lay down. It is original and never been serviced.
Ordered new pads, Master cylinder assembly and bleed nipple.
Then, as im wheeling the damn thing off the drive to bed the pads in, one of the carbs starts gushing petrol! Lovely.
Its beer time now.
Cheers

This might seem a bit weird but here goes anyway. In running similar setup but with 130 main jets. Fuelling is spot on. However do get horrid misfire in a cross wind.
I spoke to an old british bike expert and he reckons I was right thinking a cross wind would affect the fuelling. I know its weird, but I can run straight on a road with high hedges either side in the fens hit a patch of road with a break in the hedges or open motorway, add in some good cross wind and hey presto, runs like sh*t!

500/550 only charge at over 3,000 rpm and then only just with a standard headlamp and not quite with a halogen replacement
Thats very interesting, Thats not an issue Ive had with my bike though. I run halogens, twin tail lights, removed kickstart and electronic ignition and even with lights on i can get a reasonable charging voltage at the battery at tickover.  In fact I'v never noticed any specific issues with charging on this model. But I only have my own bike and its the only 550 ive ever owned. Mine has been rewired though, which I did myself. So is it possible that there is an inherent weakness somewhere in the original wiring loom? I did have problems when using the combined electronic reg rectifier unit though.

I'm baffled by the problem your experiencing, I can only mention the same problems I had. Namely poor charging due to: One corroded connection on the 3 phase connector, and the boyer regulator rectifier which worked well for about 3 weeks, then stopped working under load. Since I put the original rusty regulator back on it works fine. Good luck.

I pressume youv'e tried richening up the idle mix? I dont know if you go in or out on those carbs. I'm running pd46 carbs with a 125 main jet, but i'm still a bit on the lean side, if that helps for comparison. You may have to change the idle jet, presuming everything is good order. Sorry dont know much about them carbs.

If you want to stick with original hubs, then it depends what size rims you want. I presume your sticking with the 19x1.85 on the front? Thats as wide as your'll need on the front anyway. The bigger front tyre adversely effects handling. The standar rear rim is 18x1.85 which is fine up to 400. But really, a 18x2.15 would be a better choice, from any sohc 750 (apart from k7, i think) The k7 used a 17x2.15 which would allow you to fit a 130 max.
Even after getting a wider rim, I wouldnt personally be too concerned with squeezing the biggest tyre I could on the back, a 400 or 410 works very well if its not pinched by a narrow rim.
If you get a chance compare the way tyres 'appear' on a wheel, say a 400 fitted to a 1.85 and the same fitted to a 2.15. There's a big difference in profile.
Hagons or central wheel components will fit any rim you want to your hubs, they'l just drill a blank rim to suit. And they can powder coat or anodize too. But its not cheap and turn around at the moment is about 6 weeks.
This guy is very helpfull as well.  http://www.cwylde.co.uk/section.php?xSec=3

I'd like a marshal system but cant find a supplier. Any one know where you can get em? Or if they still make em for 550's.
cheers

Actually, Ive got a funny tale regarding my kick start issue. Which is no biggie anyway. Tried turning the kick start boss around 180 degrees to give me the extra clearance for the footpeg.
I did check that the head of the bolt wouldnt hit the clutch cover, by turning the lever by hand. It did. Not only did it slightly graze the cover it tore a bleeding great hole in it!
My clutch cover was seriously wafer thin!
Ahem, I laffed. Honestly, after all the aggro ive had with suppliers lately to go and break my own bike with nothing less than the power of stupidity made me crack up.
But its fixed now, and providing the new gasket doesnt leak should be good as new, (at least there's no bp style slick running down my drive, yet).
Thanks

Mot'd today! yea!  ;D
Forgot how miserable it is not having a bike on the road, seems to play on my mind even if I dont fancy riding it.
Will have to spend a bit more on it but for now at least its kosher.
Cheers

Yeah thats a good conversion, the wider rim. Never understood why the 550's came with wm2's. Had a 17/250 with a 130/80 on the bike originally, it handled really well with that combo. I think ill go for a 400 on the back next time the 110/90 roadrunner is too wide and gets pushed out of shape.
Thanks for the info.
