CB350/400 / What does the 400 engine weigh without head & block ?
« on: February 05, 2021, 11:40:51 AM »
My brother is visiting me in the morning to help me lift out the engine - it will be more a case of him lifting with me directing the process.

I am wondering does anyone know the approximate weight of the engine minus the sump, head & block ?

CB350/400 / The camchain tensioner screw/bolt

The above photo is of the camchain tensioner before I attempted to remove the cylinder head. There were 3 washers between the lock nut & engine for some reason. I guess the reason for so much threaded bolt showing is due to chain wear as screwing it in seemed to release the tension - that seemed illigical to me as I thought screwing it in would increase tension!

My BiL Dave made a socially distanced visit today and told me about this firm.

https://triple-s.co.uk/

He has just had a load of Yamaha RD250 frame parts powder coated in the original gloss black with some parts done in the original matt finish. They arranged for a courier to collect the parts they reported back to him that all was well after they had removed the old paint with no corrosion issue. Parts delivered back by same courrier in bespoke cardboard packs to prevent damage All parts were properly bunged/masked up with superb finish at reasonable price.

They do a special primer coat to prevent corrosion issues with a hot application before the full colour coat & heat treatment.

He is now getting some Gold Finished Steering parts  on his  Ducati done. They knew all about the 4 or 5 different shades of gold they used at the factory & can match to suit his particular model year.

I suspect others here might know about Tripple S but worth repeating - they don't do gates mainly bikes & other automotive stuff.
They also will powder coat fuel tanks!!

CB350/400 / CB 400 F2 - rev counter drive question ?
« on: November 20, 2020, 02:40:27 AM »
Whilst cleaning up my camshaft top cover I noticed that the screw that holds the cable in place was badly mauled - thankfully loose as no cable came with the bike - this makes me a tad suspicious.

Looking at the drive gear it has the colour of a fibre / or slightly rusted gear - there is an oil seal at the top according to the parts manual.I am wondering if it would be sensible to replace the seal plus can it be removed easily ?

I can't find anything in my manual or in 'NJ' rebuild about it though I might have missed it whilst speed reading most of the 36 pages.
I have removed the retaining clip that sits above the rev counter drive gear so far gentle pulling has not enabled me to remove the drive gear. The inner part where the retaining clip sits rotates easily enough so not sure what's stopping me from pulling out the drive gear ?

Will heat treating the casing after painting damage the gear itself if I cant remove it maybe not a good idea to bake the camshaft cover as I do not want to risk any distortion ?

Misc / Open / Honda 400/4 camshaft design is it normal?
« on: November 19, 2020, 03:31:26 PM »
I was a little surprised to find that the camshaft does not have replaceable bearings as it appears to run directly in the alloy head & camshaft cover. Fortunately my bearing surfaces look good. If needed how do you repair the worn housings?

CB350/400 / Removing the rocker shafts 400/4
« on: November 18, 2020, 03:55:58 PM »
My manual states a suitable 10 mm should be used to withdraw the rocker shafts.

Firstly are all 10mm bolts the same thread or is there a fine & coarse option? I have as yet to buy a selection of useful metric bolts so any suggestion as to suitable length is welcome.

CB350/400 / Final engine bolt(s) removal question ?
« on: November 10, 2020, 08:40:41 PM »
I have removed the sump & oil pick up strainer all of the upper  engine brackets are out. I have undone the rocker cover bolts in readiness for engine final stage lift out.

Engine  is now being supported by what looks like one long rear lower shaft plus a pair front lower bolt(s) that appear to screw into the engine separately?

I have lots of blocks of wood if I need to do some sort of support when I remove the last bolts.

Bearing in mind the lifting of the engine itself is there a good way/order  to remove the last of the engine support bolts

CB350/400 / Rubik's Cube question - 400/4 battery & air box ??
« on: November 09, 2020, 05:37:12 PM »
I have finally begun to strip down the bike ready for removing the engine.

I'm struggling to remove the steel box frame that makes up the battery box & air filter box. Can this be removed from the frame without taking out the rear wheel?

There is a hardened rubber section around the oval air filter box that has been all painted over with Hamerited is this part of the air box or does it come off?

So far I've not managed to get it out - is there a secret way?

CB350/400 / CB400F2 Chain Guard 40510-377-000
« on: November 06, 2020, 11:58:38 PM »
The chain guard on my bike has been painted black at some time and although it does have a small crease near the end it is quite small so I could go down the re-chrome route if a new one is not available from the UK.

DS & Bertrums are no stock or discontinued aside from CMS is there anyone else that supply replicas?

The bulbs in the Pilot Light Unit are not like ordinary car bulbs - is there a type designation so I can get replacements or even better is there an LED unit that fits & is suitable?

Any links much appreciated please.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Battery Location question ?
« on: November 06, 2020, 08:03:53 PM »
The battery connections on my bike were as follows when I bought her- the positive cable is nearest the fuel tank, the earth cable is nearest the rear wheel. The battery that came with the bike has the positive terminal as in the photo.

The live terminal is very close to the air cleaner frame/box where it could easily short out - I have inserted a small rubber pad for safety to tery to push the terminal away.

is there something missing to prevent this or is it not the right battery or cable layout?

CB350/400 / DS Pilot Light Case
« on: November 01, 2020, 11:29:17 AM »
https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB400F-SUPER-SPORT-FOUR/part_82422/

A couple of weeks ago I received the above "High Quality Aftermarket Direct Replacement" from DS and I am disappointed in the Quality aspect - is it just me as it seems a very cheap looking casing?

As I never had a CB400/4 back in the day am wondering if I expected too much or has the old casing aged to make it appear different?
