CB500/550 / Wheels
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:14:03 PM »
Has anybody fitted aftermarket wheels to their CB550 ie Excel wheels etc?  Can anybody give me some good advice, I looking at my sorry state of a CB550 and planning what to do with it, its going to be a Cafe Race I know that much, I have been trawling through the internet and getting lots of ideas and tips about going about the transformation.  I fancy having black rimed wheels, but apart from stripping the chrome off the original wheels and getting them powder coated I can't seem to find anybody who sells plain steel wheels or aluminium ones in the standard size (especially 40H rims, I want ideally to use the original hubs).  That lead me onto the next question, if I was to fit an aftermaket wheel/rims I could have a better tyre choice.  Once again your thoughts would be appreciated.

CB500/550 / Replacing the forks or not?
« on: July 20, 2010, 05:16:24 PM »
The jury is out on this one at the moment, I have a CB550 that I want to turn into a Cafe Race, the dilemma that I am in it the moment is whether to change the front end on the bike or not.

I have a set of CBR600 forks (rwu) and yokes, the question is do I fit these?  Any thoughts?

Has anybody any experience fitting alternative forks and photo's?

Thanks

New Member Introductions / New to the world of SOHC
« on: July 20, 2010, 05:07:00 PM »
Thanks to all those who have been replying to the post's that I have put up on the forum, expect I will have a lot of questions.

About me, I have been into bike for years, I have had lots of sports bikes over the years ie CBR's/Fireblades etc and I have spent about 10 yrs doing motocross, 2-stroke and 4-strokes.  I have to say that my CRF450 was one of the best bike I have ever owned/riden apart from a RC30!. As you can guess I'm a Honda man!

Anyhow I fancied something different & after rebuilding the engine on my CBR 6 i wanted a challenge, so after spending a saturday night trying to find some insperation I came across the world of CB's and Cafe Racer's.

I found a rather sorry looking CB550 that need bringing back to life, and that's where I am at at the moment, doing some research and getting some ideas before I get to work stripping the bike down, rebuilding it and converting it into a cafe racer (rightly or wrongly)!

CB500/550 / Seat Unit and Tank
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:42:29 PM »
I have been trawling the internet trying to find somewhere in the UK where I can get a Cafe Racer style seat unit and tank, I would be grateful if somebody could point me in the right direction or post a link/s, or parts in general ie clocks, exhausts, shocks, wheels etc for a cafe race project.

CB500/550 / What Model is my CB550?
« on: July 14, 2010, 08:59:16 PM »
I posted this message on the main forum, but SteveD CB500F suggested that I posted it here also.

Hi, I have just bought a 79' CB550, I am just trying to work out what model it is, but I'm having a little trouble putting two and two together.  Not sure if the bike has a different frame or the engine has been changed?  The frame and engine numbers are as follows: Engine No CB550E-1131939 and the Frame No CB550K-2025746.  I have tried working it out from the model numbers of the forum but I can't seem to see a match, can anybody shed any light on this please.  The carbs on the bike are PD46A's.

Here's a couple of photo's, she not pretty, basically i bought the bike as spare or repairs and a couple of boxes of bits!
