Great piece of engineering though.

..in two minds wrt this Dave; as I get older I’m shying away more and more from complexity, the advantages rarely seem to outweigh the outright pain of cost and bloody maintenances. If you can make something work with 2 or 3 moving parts, why would you want to do it with 20? 😂.

Great engineering to me now infers ingenuity and lateral thinking simplicity.
Just my 2penneth…

Thanks Trig, that indeed was what I’ve done.

I went through the same with a CB400F2; mine was a Canadian model with nice ignition key steering lock, whereas the UK versions had you grovelling under the headlamp. My question is, why would Honda go to this considerable extra expense of frame variations and lock hardwares? (the 400F2 also had additional frame differences wrt pillion footrest mountings iaw international markets)

Air leak in the exhaust manifold area? (which closes up upon heating)

Not as desirable this end Roo, as specifically a UK spec’d bike. Tried last year at £4.5K or so… failed. I’m retrying it now at mid 3’s … I paid £3999 eBay bid 7 years ago Uk.
Was naive to bring it to Oz I guess, but hey, it’s given me fun.

Wow… as typing this got a call from my ad… an English guy here who had an N reg (mine too) Purple Popsical @ 16yo. Fairly local - fingers crossed.

Ewan… just put my Fizzy up for sale…. there is something about them that makes you smile. Well, me anyways.

Interesting. But if I read this right the lever will begin to work sooner… in layman’s terms?
Holding the lever’s mechanical advantage higher in its range is counter active to my stretched out fingers and their mechanical disadvantage!

I’m not keen to de-standardise my ‘750, but a shortening of the lever’s piston lug may satisfy my need; ie closer to the bars lever position before braking action, giving my fingers more comfortable advantage.

Wrt heating the disc suggestion, not getting as much riding as I want in this hemisphere…. seemed to have swapped weather with the UK … far too much rain of late & the retirement plan failing dismally. You stole our sunshine the past few months 😂.

Thanks Nigel… always appreciate the technical learnings…

…thanks Nigel; will try the higher range heat cycle, but put the deburr on hold as it sounds like a thorough flush subsequently needed, even assuming metallic waste bits don't damage the (all new) seals.

Thanks Bryan; good to know. Yep, EVERYTHING about the brake system is tickety-boo so I guess I’m stuck with it.  Cheers.

Bradders - you’ll be after something like this. It’s not rocket science to do, and suddenly you’ll be repairing things that didn’t need repairing - as mentioned, very satisfying.

Obviously practice on a couple of scrap pieces first…

Can anybody verify the standard piston diameter here please… my manuals suggest 14mm, but within the reservoir suggests 12mm. Furthermore, prior to any knowledge on this topic I simply ordered a Yamiya service kit and fitted it… without any dramas. Sadly I’ve binned the old piston and so can’t easily measure / verify the bore now.

I ask because the front brake has a woody feel to it; at abouts 20 mm (lever ) ball travel it’s biting, and within a very short further pull I’m at max effort.

I’m pretty sure the reservoir is original, and as stated, has just had new internals. The lines are OEM, ie NOT the braided type. I’m using sintered pads and the stopping performance is fine. To clarify, I’d just like a bit more travel / feel within the system.

CB500/550 / Re: Fancy a conversion to cast iron discs, anyone done this?
« on: September 30, 2022, 11:32:50 AM »
Funny old thing, but I was up at Lindsay’s place (engine builder / anything automotive) and there on the floor was a Honda wheel he’d put drilled cast iron discs onto, as he prepped a race / bored out ‘750. Very labour intensive he told me, working out the drill pattern with compasses and cardboard template…. which was then used to mark up the disc.

Fundamentally, the holes are indeed to improve wet performance, as they give the water somewhere to go, plus increase surface area for cooling. On the downside there is less surface area for the brake pads to act upon.

Cast iron apparently conducts heat far more efficiently than stainless, and so these discs can be significantly thinner - if the SS discs were of similar thickness they’d warp / dish & seize.

And then there’s the rust…😱.

Comfy - I was using this in my recently sold 400F. Ignore the $ price, I’m googling from Oz, but did buy my Shorais in the Uk < I retired.

https://shoraipower.com/lfx14a5-bs12-backorder--p74

It was not particularly undersized - so not sure if it’ll fit your bill.

To the nay sayers I’ve now had 3 LiFe in 1970s Hondas - and had no issues…. have just installed #3 in the ‘750 restoration.

The advantages are obviously weight, but more than that longevity. The LiFe’s I bought in 2015 are still going strong - one has the arduous job of cranking a Moto Guzzi 1280cc Griso. The other + is that they tend not to discharge if idle, meaning your old Honda should crank fine if left 12 months. (obviously if you’ve alarms / clocks etc fitted there would be an issue)

So cost… perhaps 1.5x. But outweighed by longevity and minimal pita once fitted - for me. (They are less tolerant of mis-set VRs, and really should only be subjected to a 14-15v charging range - so the electric system has to be in good fettle)

Thanks guys for the kind words upon completion of the K2 - appreciated.

No comments as to the deletion of the pillion footrests … it’s an Oz thing. Over here (QLD at least), there is no annual MOT, rather a ‘Roadworthy’ test is only required at every change of ownership (£60 thereabouts). There is however a stiff annual Registration fee which includes CTP (compulsory third party) insurance - and this goes into a state pot to take care of all road accident hospital fees - life changing care costs included. Whether an individual decides to then go out and buy further insurances … theft, fire, liability etc  … is entirely up to him.
Long winded, sorry… but if you declare the machine will never carry a pillion you can lessen that CTP figure significantly, in which case you have to remove the footrests. (My solo CPTs circa now £260 each - ugh)

Anyways, tbh, it took me a while, but on balance I reckon I prefer the above to what we have in the UK.

Um… wow Nigel, thanks. Will need a couple of rereads (!) to better fathom it all. Full disclosure, I view ICEs as dinosauric (think I just made that word up) and well past their sell by date. Fair do’s though, the engineering & technical brilliance that has evolved along the route has been resourceful & incredible.
Fingers crossed we can now see the same brilliance wrt electrical energy storages. (& nope, not intending to rile folk / kick off some new thread 😂)
Thanks again.
