I’m having hot idle problems with my 400/4, and I’m not sure what to do next ! Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received !
The bike starts from cold ok with a bit of choke and then quickly settles at a 1200rpm idle off choke. Pulls ok and will return to idle whilst still warming up, but after 10 miles or so when hot it just won’t idle and will die when trying to open the throttle from idle or low engine speed. Above 2500rpm, all is fine and it pulls well, it’s just that 1200 – 2500 making it a pain in traffic and at junctions.
I’m sure it has to be carb related, and I thought I’d found the problem with float heights at 24mm, but after resetting floats to 21mm it is still stalling when hot. Float chambers are clean of any debris, Idle jets are clear and the fact that it revs fine when >2500 suggests the main jet / needle circuits and tank to carbs fuel delivery are fine and I think it would rule out ign (new plugs and caps with Boyer ign at std timing)
I have ranged the air screw settings from 1.5 turns to 3 turns in ½ turn steps and it affects idle to main jet transition as you’d expect, but it still cuts when hot – I’m thinking about dropping the float height another 2mm to make sure the idle jet is sat in fuel – maybe a bit of vapourisation when hot or a slightly porous float ?
I’m running K&N filters with a 0.82 main jet and needles raised a notch and plugs look spot on – I know from air filters are notorious for tuning games - would they really cause such a dramatic running problem ?
Any ideas or suggestions ?
Many thanks in advance !!

You can pick them up for very little money these days but, as with most things, you get what you pay for ! I payed about £5 for an 'Ebay Special' from China that will allow real time viewing / recording with an appropriate app on a tablet or phone and easily fits through a plug hole and has an LED light source. Quality is definitely good enough to check on piston crown etc, but I wouldn't want to stick it down my neck - or anywhere else in my person fort that matter.

Hi ll,
Just wondering if there are there any 750's to avoid ? I've run out of projects and to avoid decorating and gardening, I'm considering another bike and I'm thinking that a 750 would be a great bike for the wife to pillion on as and when the sun appears ! Are there any common problems, or specific models to avoid ? Any common issues with US bikes etc etc ?
Any help & thoughts would be appreciated !
I also have no space left in my garage and not much more cash, so any recommendations on bank robbery and/or Tardis construction would also be appreciated.

Steve,
I used a Vesrah kit from Saisei when I built my 400 engine - I didn't realise at the time, but David who runs Saisei is a member on here, so maybe worth a PM. All gaskets appeared good quality and have given me no issues so far.
I got all of my oil seals and O rings as OE from DSS - bare in mind that the gasket kit will probably not give you all of the O Rings you need and from memory I think I had to get the majority of the main oil gallery and oil pump related O rings individually and probably a few others - again it's probably worth a PM to David if you're considering the Vesrah kit to check which O rings are in the set and then you can plan for the others - nothing worse than stalling a rebuild whilst waiting for a part !
Good luck with your rebuild !

Paul,
I did the same at the weekend and had a similar problem with one of those little inaccessible screws. You may find a very sharp tap with the sharpest screwdriver that you can find may free it off - worked for me. I sat the slider on top of plenty of rags to protect the lower chamfered edge of the slider and then through an open vice to support it before giving it a tap.
Hope you get it sorted - raising the needles on my 400 by 1 step really helped to improve the mid range and allowed me to lean off the air screw to improve idle.

Ash, If these are a similar / same design principle to the 400, then the 'top hat' was part of the bronze bush.

I had my first trip out on the 400/4 of 2016 a few days ago and I was quickly reminded that the front end does seem a bit under damped. Noticed it on the first few post rebuild rides last year, but having never owned a 400 before, I'm not sure what's 'normal' !
The forks were rebuilt with the rest of the bike last year with the old springs and fresh 10wt oil, but there does seem to be a bit of bounce to the front end - should I be looking to move to 15wt oil, or trying more volume of exiting oil ? anything else to be checking ?
Also noticed a very minor weep of oil from n/s drain bolt, which had that horrible stripping thread feel when I attempted to nip it up a bit, so I'm pondering if I going to be able to helicoil without a complete strip of that fork leg - I'm guessing I'll have to to make sure there's no swarf from drill / tap for the insert ?
Thoughts and advice welcomed !

Bullit,
You could try CW Classics along Rawreth Lane in Rayleigh - he repaired a small hole and minor corrosion along the similar area on my tank with a plate, but it was nowhere near as bad as the one you have !

I did dig the boot retaining clip out with a pick, and then had to buy the long nosed circlip pliers that many others mention which made it a much more simple task. All good now, just need the rain to stop for a road test !

Hi Mike,
Welcome and good luck with both of your projects ! I'm also fairly new to Honda ownership and also have a westfield - believe it or not I find the bike a more practical option !

Could do with some help / wisdom again please !
I have noticed a small brake fluid leak from around the brake lever recently, so I ordered a m/c repair kit and set about dismantling it over the weekend. Didn't get to far before running into trouble ! The rubber boot has perished and I had to dig out the remains of it, but I'm struggling to get the wire retainer out even before tackling the circlip that I was expecting to be the real fun ! Any tips or tricks welcomed !!

Oh no Roy !!!!
Such a simple thing to do when you're mind's already thinking about the next step in the build. As MCTID says, at least you know what's wrong and how to sort it ! I hope you get lucky with replacing it in situ, but you're right - there's a flange on inner side of the seal that will probably make it difficult for the new one. It's not too bad to get back to splitting the cases - might seem like it now given the time to get where you are, but probably not too bad as everything is already clean and new when you break it down and reassemble !
Sure it'll be running very soon !!

Hi Steve,
I got oversize pistons from DS and so far all is well - As Mike says, a big bore kit would potentially be a cheaper option, but I didn't investigate suppliers or quality of kits etc - I didn't want to get involved in rejetting / dyno work that would be likely with cc increase.
